Most of the board was ecstatic about Backspacer when it came out. It was received well. That's what the word "reception" means: how it was received, not where it stands after being processed over a period of four years of relative inactivity.

I once calculated on here that something like only 0.5% (at best) of PJ's hardcore fanbase is represented on RM. Even if it's a predominant opinion on one forum (and I'm not really sure that it is) it's only a small portion of the hardcore fanbase (not to mention all of the other fans).

I used very very very safe estimates. I'd estimate there's something like 50,000 "hardcore" fans. The kind of fans who go to multiple shows, collect bootlegs, etc. I base this off of things like: how many people buy an EV solo release in the first week of release (US sold about 70k, ITW about 35k). How many of those bought on the first day (if you know anything about record sales, it's often something like half of the first full week total). You can also take into account how many people bought backspacer in the first week (189K) and therefore how many on the very first day. Or, how many people bought the PJ20 soundtrack? How many bought Live on 10 legs? How many buy the DVD's? Shit like that. It's just an estimate and I think if you average the above factors out, 50k is pretty safe. Yeah yeah, I know people download, but the ones who would seek out and find a board like RM are ones who buy, atleast that's what I think and opinions could differ. But I really don't think I'm that far off, I built in a pretty good cushion so if anythng 0.5% is on the high side, not even counting people that register but don't post on RM. Truthfully, I thnk it's more like 0.1% or 0.2%. And that's talking only hardcore fans. You facotr in "other" fans who buy later in the first week or after, or just download, or just buy an album once in awhile and like the shows when they come around, then even 0.1% is a massive stretch.

I'll back you up on that. I think Stereogum's assessment a few months ago was not bad and not too far off of mine (although I'd def rank yield higher than riot act). I put Backspacer in the middle of their catalogue. I dig it, and it adds a new more easygoing fun dimension to them that didn't exist before.

yeah, its a really good record, and for me its in the bottom of the list. It has aged very well but the main problem is there havent been new releases so far...that´s the real shame.

You're missing the point. The point is that this is just a small sliver of the fanbase. YOu want to estimate a larger hardcore fanbase? Smaller? It will change the total number by less than half of a percent. The point, again, is: RM is a very very very small portion of the PJ fanbase. So don't think any predominant opinion (if there is one) is representative of the PJ fanbase. I'm not sure what it's going to take for the two a youz to lower your expectations at this point.
