comic stories as a medium seem to be built almost entirely on expository dialogue. Some of that will have to translate to film

Did you see Guardians of the Galaxy? Outside of that one and the first Iron Man I haven't been blown away by any of the Marvel films either.
Yeah, I didn't like GOTG. I mean, it's a lot better than The Avengers, The Dark World, or The Winter Soldier, but that's not saying much.
I didn't see those other two, but Winter Soldier was pretty solid. Not genre defining or anything. But a really fun and tense movie.
guardians is fun, and it'll help scratch the Episode 8 itch while you wait for december

I'll see it for sure. I was super pumped about it. But I pretty much refuse to see movies like that in the theater. I'll grab in on Netflix soon, though.

I have really high expectations.

Marvel is best when it fully embraces the comic vibe and doesn't give any fucks: Talking raccoons, rainbow bridges, people dressed as flags who shockingly aren't evil, etc.

When they play it safe, they tend to be worse. It sounds like they played it safe with this one. I'll probably check it out next week.

my expectations were not high for this. then i heard the director bolted so soon into it and my expectations stayed the same.

my expectations should have been a bit higher as i thought this was very well done. the pace, story telling and acting all worked together.

i see its opening to around 60 mill which is great. its not a avengers movie but ties into the shared universe really well.

congrats all the way around

I just saw it. I enjoyed it. It's one of the lesser entries in their catalog but it also doesn't aim that high (and I don't mean that as a criticism, although it does limit how far the final product can go). It's trying to tell a smaller story which is probably a good thing after a huge run of 'fate of the world' movies (basically everything in phase 2). It's like a palete cleanser. Ant Man's a very likeable character, some clever moments, entertaining, watchable in all the ways that marvel movies tend to be, but unlike the Cap 2 - Guardians - Avengers 2 (which I really liked) run it doesn't feel like it's going to warrant multiple viewings.

I for one really enjoy the shared universe tie ins, and while that scene was not necessary per se, it didn't feel forced.

I'm not sure I understood the second post credit scene.

Some of the criticisms about the villians and stories starting to run together are fair enough, but these are comic book movies. The stories are usually about people using fantastic abilities and problems to solve fantastic world threatening problems. There's only so many ways you can deviate from that structure. The key to making them continuously enjoyable is to make sure that the characters themselves are people you want to watch and root for so that the spectacle remains fun. You're not in any of these things for the plot.

My Marvel rankings would probably be something along these lines post ant man (the numbers grouped together are all very close)

1. Avengers
2. Cap 2

3. Avengers 2
4. Guardians
5. Iron Man (it's been a while since I've seen it)

6. Cap I
7. Iron Man 3

8. Ant Man
9. Thor

10. Thor 2
11. Hulk
12. Iron Man 2

Maybe not a great story, but easily the best directed action of any Marvel film to date. And the character development scenes were concise enough to maintain tone, but still impactful and not purely narrative the way the worst moments have been. Probably my favorite front-to-back one of these, to date.

Guardians was pretty boring. I remember some really dumb stuff (green lady's passionless exposition about experienced personal horrors, almost everything in act three) and some moderately funny one liners in the first half.

Winter Soldier is easily the most solid of any of the Marvel movies.

I feel bad for people who cant just watch GotG or Ant-man and just enjoy them for what they are.

ant-man if it was going to be a one and done solidly fulfilled its role. the fact that rudd is going to be in other movies as scott lang shows the faith they creators have in their larger story they are telling.

all the bonus credit scenes remind me a lot of the back up stories they would have in the old comics and that is a good thing.

My father in law took me to see this while the ladies were getting a pedicure. It was pretty enjoyable. As mentioned, I enjoyed the smaller stakes and the heist movie qualities.
