I operate under the assumption that I will hate all Australian bands whose names don't begin with The Birthday P.

You may wish to make an exception for The Dirty Three and The Necks.

Oh, I didn't know The Dirty Three were Australian. I also like two songs by The Church.

I think that's pretty accurate.

"Show Me How to Live" by Audioslave might be better than any Soundgarden song.

The thread title says "Unpopular", not "Stupid".

Getaway Car
Like a Stone
Set It Off
I Am the Highway
Dandelion
Be Yourself

These are all Audioslave songs I really like. At best, Audioslave gave Cornell an opportunity to stretch out melodically in a way that Soundgarden's tightly-wound, oftentimes asymmetrical arrangements and compositions didn't support, but with a harmonic simplicity that he doesn't favor in his solo material. For the most part I find their rock songs built on Tom Morello dropped-D RATM riffs pretty forgettable. I don't think "Show Me How to Live" is anything special.

Agreed.

When I saw SG they didn't play Black Hole Sun which was kinda odd. But they played Blow Up the Outside World and it was incredible live. The two friends I went with were disappointed in the show but I thought they were great.

I think it's one of the most stirring and succinct "crisis of faith" songs I've ever heard. There's anger and fire behind it, and there's honest probing in it. I think Cornell (Did he write it? I'm gonna assume he did.) summarizes the whole conundrum with religion, the solace it offers, and questioning it with "Is this a cure or is this a disease?" There's a striking duality and clarity to that lyric. The imagery of the song perfectly captures the defiant, insatiable struggle of a human (both an individual and a species) need to understand one's place in the universe. I think Morello's blunt, powerful riffing is a perfect backdrop: make noise, scream to the heavens, demand an answer: "You gave me life, now show me how to live." Beautifully simple and direct, yet full of profound need and fury. For all their musical complexity, I don't get as deep a feeling out of any SG song.

I totally respect that you get that out of it, LV, and enjoyed reading your take on the song -- but I don't identify with the content nor is it a very exciting song to me on a musical level. Just doesn't hit that sweet spot for me, you know?

For sure, I get that. Art appreciation is a mix of semi-objective analysis and finding that subjective "sweet spot."
