It was a better episode, but nothing outstanding. Some really bad forced lines again. That "pain is inexhaustible" one was pretty cringeworthy.

Its just not a very compelling story. I feel like I'm just witnessing it, and not engaged in it at all.

I'll also mention again how much I hate Farrell in this role. I hate his fake American accent. He's no Dominic West for sure.
His accent bothers you that much? I never really noticed it, just sounds like any other guy to me

It has an affected "western" twang to it. Like he watched Gunsmoke while practicing his accent.

I have heard a couple people talk about how screwing with the timeline more (flashing back and forward more, kinda like chud mentioned) could have made the whole thing more interesting, but to me the story is just so bad that I don't think that would have made it more compelling. It probably would have made it even more of a mess.

My point was, after this most recent episode it feels like the real bulk of this story is coming in the aftermath of that shooting, which means they spent half the season in a set up phase. To me, if that is the case, it would have made more sense to get to it much earlier.

But despite all that, there's really no getting around the bad writing here.

This

I don't know about moving forward from there right off the bat, but starting there and flashing back / catching up to it would have helped us slog through the first few episodes, knowing that some action was the culmination.

Every time that chick sang those haunting tunes in the bar I had to consciously keep myself awake, not to mention the long 20 second takes of someones face, without lines to say.

I started reading The Big Sleep again last night. So good, and the style was such a huge influence on True Detective. Love it. I really think the big issue with this season, besides the mechanical, stilted dialogue, has to with no foil for the main characters. Everyone is way too similar. The characters of Woody and McConaughey provided a great balance.

Those shots only work when a character has some depth behind them, which none of these characters have.

Yep. And you can't keep using it. Like in football, you can't keep taking deep shots all game long. You have to build up to it.

maybe the biggest problem is the new director/ editting. the show just isnt paced properly abd the mood is hardly effective

Yeah, but they're really nailing the overhead freeway shots every 7 minutes.
