Rank the Albums Again. This Time Weighted! #1: Vitalogy

Post by 4/5 »

1.Vitalogy 16.2
2. No Code 15.2
3. Yield 14.9
4. Binaural 12.5
5. Ten 11.4
6. Vs. 11.2
7. Riot Act 7.5
8. Pearl Jam 4.6
9. Lightning Bolt 3.33
10. Backspacer 3.30

Yield:
Spoiler: show
3.
Image

Yield is our #3 ranked album with a mean score of 14.9 points.

Mean: 14.9
Median: 14
Mode: 15

Yield was ranked #1 by 15% of respondents, receiving the third highest amount of 1st place votes.

Similarly, it was ranked in the top 3 by 58% of users.

Only 6% of participants ranked it less than 5th. That is the second lowest amount of below-average rankings of any album.

On the other hand, the most common rank was 5th (27%).

The highest score it received was 30 points, with 4 other scores above 20 points.

Only 6% of participants gave it less than 10 points.

The majority of scores are between 12 and 16 points.
Binaural:
Spoiler: show
4.
Image

Binaural is our #4 ranked album, with a mean score of 12.5 points.

Mean: 12.5
Median: 12
Mode: 15

Binaural was ranked 1st by 12% of participants.

It received the 4th most 1st place votes, and is tied with Ten for the 4th most 1st/2nd place vote total.

It was ranked in the top 4 by 58% of participants.

However, it was most commonly ranked #6 (33%).

It was ranked as low as 9th by a single voter.

The highest score it received was 30 points, next 25, followed by a flurry between 15 and 20.

It performed pretty similarly to Ten in the raw rankings, but received higher top end scores.

It received 10 or more points from 73% of users.

The majority of scores were between 10 and 15 points.
Ten:
Spoiler: show
5.
Image

Ten is our 5th ranked album, with a mean score of 11.4 points.

Mean: 11.4
Median: 11
Mode: 10

Ten was ranked between 1st and 8th.

It received only a single 1st place vote, which means it has the fewest 1st place votes of any of our top 6 albums, but on the other hand it did receive 7 2nd place votes, tied for the most of any album.

The rankings are somewhat evenly distributed between 2nd and 7th.

It was most commonly ranked 5th, by 30% of participants.

The highest score it received was 20 points, by two users.

The most common range of scores appears to be between 10 and 15 points.

It was scored in the single digits by 30% of users, but the lack of any particularly high scores (and the high number of 10 & 11 point scores) probably contribute to the score being so close to Vs.
Vs:
Spoiler: show
6.
Image

Vs. is the number 6 album with a mean score of 11.2 points.

Mean: 11.2
Median: 11
Mode: 10

Vs. is our first album that received first place votes (9%).

Vs. was ranked as high as 1 and as low as 9.

It was most commonly ranked 6th. (24% of participants)

76% of participants ranked it between 3rd and 6th.

The majority of scores (about 64%) are between 9 and 14.

The highest score it received was 40 points. (17 points was next highest)

With the strong concentration of 3-6 rankings, it seems that Vs. is most commonly viewed as an average to above average PJ album by many users, but as a clearly elite PJ by relatively few.

Only 12% ranked it in their top two.
Riot Act:
Spoiler: show
7.
Image

Riot Act is our #7 album with an average score of 7.5 points.

If S/T was our most groupthink album, Riot Act may well be the least.

Riot Act was ranked as high as 2 and as low as 10 and received at least two votes of everything in between.

The most common ranking was 7th, with about 39% of participants ranking it 7th.

The highest score was 15 points, which two users gave it.

RA was most commonly given between 5 and 11 points.

It is the last album to receive any last place votes (9%).

RA is kind of all alone in the rankings. The three most recent albums are clearly the least-liked albums overall, while the first six are clearly the most-liked albums. RA seems to operate in its own space among PJ albums. It would probably be equally accurate to say it's the most well-liked of the last 4 albums or to say it's the least-favorite of the first 7 albums, depending on your perspective. I don't think the numbers would really allow you to lump S/T with the favorites or our #6 album in with the least favorites, so RA is somewhat unique in that regard.
Pearl Jam:
Spoiler: show
8.
Image

Pearl Jam's S/T album comes in 8th with an average score of 4.6 points.

S/T appears to come the closest of any album of achieving something of a group consensus.

It is the only the album that wasn't rated by a single participant as a top 5 album.

It was ranked 8th by 61% of participants. (This is the highest concentration of rankings that any album received.)

It was ranked last by another 21% of participants, but for most other users it ranked just above the last two albums.

It received more scores of "0" than any album besides Backspacer.

The majority of scores are between 3 and 6.

The highest score it received was 10, given by three different users.

If we view a score of "10" as representing the median PJ album based on this scoring system (100 points / 10 albums = 10), then this is the only album to not be rated as an above-average PJ album by any participants. Additionally, this idea is reinforced by the previously mentioned fact that no users ranked S/T in the top half of PJ albums.

The consensus appears to be that it is a below-average PJ album that is slightly better than the two albums that have been since released.
Lightning Bolt:
Spoiler: show
9.
Image

Lightning Bolt managed to sneak into 9th place by a single vote, just edging out Backspacer with an average score of 3.33 points.

Lightning Bolt received 11 points from one participant, but otherwise failed to receive more than 8 points from any other user, and generally received between 0 and 4 points.

LB received the most last place votes, with about 42% of respondents ranking it last.

LB's peak ranking was 5.

85% of participants ranked it in the bottom three, including 79% in the bottom two.

While LB received the most last place votes, Backspacer was nearly three times as likely to have received a score of "0" than LB. It appears possible that more participants prefer BS to LB, but there is a group who completely dismisses BS more strongly than they do LB. Perhaps for people who dislike both albums, there is at least a song or two--something slightly redeeming about LB--that they find missing completely from BS.
Backspacer:
Spoiler: show
10.
Image

In an extremely close race, Backspacer comes in last, with an average score of 3.30 points.

It received 12 points from two users, but otherwise the next highest value was 7 points, and the vast majority of participants gave it between 0 and 4 points.

The most common ranking it received was 9th, with half of all respondents putting it in the 9th slot. One user ranked it 4th overall, giving it the highest peak ranking of the final three albums.

91% of participants ranked it in the bottom three, including nearly 82% ranking it either last or next to last.

It did not however receive the most last place votes. That honor belongs to....
Method:
Spoiler: show
Because we obviously need more ranking.

The more people who participate, the better this will be. Hopefully this doesn’t sound like the worst idea ever, so thanks for participating. Even if it does sound dumb, thanks for participating.

First, rank the albums 1-10. Next, you have 100 total points that you will divide and give to each album. For example, this could look like:
1. Ten 16
2. Vs. 15
3. Vitalogy 14
4. No Code 10
5. Yield 10
6. Binaural 10
7. Riot Act 10
8. S/T 6
9. Backspacer 5
10. Lightning Bolt 4

Please PM your rankings to me. If you would like to share your rankings in this thread, I ask that you take away your weighted score so that we can do a countdown/reveal thing in a few weeks as responses have slowed down. (Obviously we already have an unweighted ranking thread, so that’s up to you.)

Basic rules:
You have 100 total points
Assign each album a point value, whole numbers only (you may assign an album 0 points if that's how you feel)
You may assign multiple albums the same number of points
Make sure your points add up to exactly 100. (It might be helpful to view 10 as a baseline score. If you ranked all albums equally, they'd each receive 10 points.)
Your rankings must be 1-10, with no ties even if you assign two albums the same score.

The goal is to have a composite RM album ranking. By ranking the albums in this manner, we will have at least three different ways to measure RM’s rankings. We will have a total score for each album, which will represent the total weighted preference of all respondents. We will also be able to measure the most common ranking position for each album, as well as the average ranking for each album.

Theoretically, we could have a result that has say, Vitalogy as the weighted winner, meaning it received the most points, while Binaural received the most #1 votes, and No Code finished with the highest average ranking.

Thanks for your participation. Have at it!

And, sorry Ruddo.

Can we assign 0 points to an album if we so choose?

The lowest I assigned is 2. Even the albums I don't like have some redeeming qualities.

Sure!

You just can't have more than 100 total points across 10 albums. Hell, you could give 100 points to one album if you wanted and have the rest at 0.
