Right Song/Wrong Album: Riot Act

Post by stip »

What songs on Riot Act would you like to have heard recorded for other albums? What should have been on Riot Act?

Ten
Vs
Vitalogy
No Code
Yield
Binaural

I would have liked to hear Thumbing My Way on No Code, I think. I find the RA version kinda lifeless, and there's a pretty good song on there.

Yellow Moon might have been pretty cool on Riot Act--the song would have had more room to breathe, and the album's tired feel would have been appropriate for the song.

Hard to Imagine would have been a good one for Riot Act as well.

pretty much every uptempo rocker belongs in a different album. Specially Ghost...imagine Ghost in yield!!

Cropduster could be amazing in Binaural...

Everything from Riot Act belongs on Riot Act. The live to tape production and Ed's unique-for-this-album vocal delivery are a big part of the flavor.

And the style of writing is pretty concentrated. Thumbing is way wrong for No Code, lyrically. Ghost is too haunted for Yield (which already has a different, more celebratory sounding "run away from your problems" song). The only albums that have any overlap to fit are Binaural and ST.

Cold Confession would've fit in fine on Riot Act.

Well sure, that song would have fit on ST if it was a proper continuation of Riot Act, instead of a retreat from it.

In the Moonlight would fit right after Half Full.

maybe before it.

Now wait, they're too similarly raunchy to be butting up together on an album. so nevermind that.

ok Red Mosquito would go between the two.

I think I have another thread idea....

You can't put Red Mosquito anywhere near Half Full.

tragabigzanda wrote:While it's not my favorite record, I think that RA is a very complete artistic statement album, bested only by Vitalogy. I think every song belongs, and the sequencing is perfect. Sure, it'd be cool to hear a few outtakes on there, like Other Side or Let It Ride (I know that's a S/T outtake). But generally speaking, I'd say the songs, production, and album packaging all came together quite well on this one...
Pretty much this.

When RA first came out, based only on the album title, I reckoned it was gonna be an angry rocker. Save You really is the only song that feels like it fits the title. I was kinda thrown off by the music, but it kinda won me over shortly after I got over my initial disappointment it wasn't an angry / aggressive rocker with songs like "Brain of J", "Grievance", "Habit", "Animal" and "Whipping".

So to relate to this thread, my first thought, pre-listening to it, of RA was expecting the likes of the heavy songs on it. The above mentioned fit the bill, and in an alt universe, would have helped the title fit the music of the album.

I think there is a bit of a relationship between NC and RA. I could imagine shuffling several songs between the two records. Can't Keep and I Am Mine could call NC home

....maybe?

The more exploratory moments on Riot Act could find a home on No Code. Can't Keep is an interesting call.

My feeling is that Irons would do something interesting.

We have Liam Finn to thank that Can't Keep became a PJ song at all. He would have been about 12yo when No Code came out.
