I'm working on a re-read through this and am almost at the end of A Clash of Kings. There are so many little details that are easy to miss the first time through. Little bits of foreshadowing, small remarks that are important world building elements that only make sense later, etc.

A lot of the basic groundwork for important plot elements was laid out early on, and it's neat to see how it plays out and how Martin has kept things in place in a fashion that makes sense over time.

What I find interesting isn't just that Jon Snow isn't included, but that The Hound is.

Yeah, I dunno if we're ever going to get like a "decoding" of his little songs and riddles in the books, but he's got something going on. Very Shakespearean to have fools speak truth to power.

I'm about to finish ASOS and oh how I wish I could've read the Tully/Frey wedding without knowing the end result. Still just absolutely heart wrenching.

I was going to reread all of these but I decided to wait until we are a few months out from book 6 and read all of terry pratchett's books again instead. Plus I remember becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the last two and was worrying that he had contracted Robert Jordan's disease.

Do people really like books 4 and 5?

I liked them, I just thought they were a noticeable decline from 1-3

Book 5 and book 3 are pretty much tied for my favorites.

Book 4 is the weak link for me, only because it focuses so heavily on POVs I'm not as interested in. Dorne and the Iron Islands were boring to me the first time through, but were a little better on my reread, since I was better able to focus on the details. It was nice to see Cersei get her comeuppance, but the rest of her chapters were painfully dull. Sam, the Starks, and Brienne are the highlights of the book.

Book 5 is measurably better, though slow-paced at many points. There's lot of world-building, which is interesting under the right circumstances, but it isn't balanced well enough with plot momentum. Otherwise, it's a good book.

I'll definitely reread before the next book. I read the first 5 so fast out of fear of spoilers I barely retained anything.
