I actually watched Goodfellas again for the first time in maybe five years. I kept expecting scenes from Casino that never showed up. Those two apparently mix together in my mind.

I think it feels more genuinely '90s because it's not overtly TRYING to be '90s like ER or Singles.

I wish Woody Allen would slow it down to one movie every two years.
2014's Magic in the Moonlight was a bad movie with some good ideas and moments mixed in there.
2015's Irrational Man was a good movie with some bad moments. Moments that take you out of the movie and make you realize how thoroughly 'written' this movie is. Moments so 'written' that not even great actors like Joaquin Phoenix and Parker Posey can sell them.
In a lot of ways, these two are the same movie. Colin Firth and Joaquin Phoenix's characters are similar in a lot of ways, they deal with the same sorts of crises, and they go through similar arcs. If this were one movie that Woody Allen had taken the time to clean up, it would be something worth seeing.
For a long time, he had the strength to pull off one great movie a year. Now, he can pull off one thing that technically qualifies as a movie every year. But there's a little bit of gold in each one. Just not enough to support a whole movie.

Woody has been making the "older cynic falls for effervescent young woman (and she falls for him too)" arc for many years now. He really needs to cut that shit out.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is one of the most profound and beautiful films I've ever seen, and expresses a large part of what the human experience is all about.

I really enjoyed Blue Jasmine. One of the better Woody Allen films I've seen in recent years.

Midnight in Paris was okay but I also love that time period with Hemingway and Fitzgerald and Ezra Pound. A bit silly and wistful but I think that was the aim of the film. I didn't enjoy Matchpoint.

I'm kinda with you. There are definitely some really good ones (some Bond films, the first Bourne), but overall the genre tends to be a bit droopy and tedious to me. Especially in the '60s and '70s - a lot of those films are slow and grim as death, and not in an interesting way.
