SOAD were really good in their prime, but I think there was a lot of good heavy rock/hard rock/alternative metal coming out at the time.

Their last couple albums were garbage, but their first two were pretty good.

The distinctions between metal subgenres are lost on me. It's just not my thing at all.

Metal might have the most subgenres of any parent genre. I could definitely see it being confusing if you're not into the music.

Metal and numetal and sublime and blink182 and soad and bizkit are the worst music to ever have been broadcasted on the airwaves and I am proud that my shitty taste is much better than all that.

Most of what I grew up understanding to be "metal" (Sabbath, Metallica, etc.) seems to have been relegated to classic rock now -- I do have a lasting fondness for that stuff, which probably marks me from the start. But anytime I would duck into the RM metal thread, I would immediately become frightened. Most of that stuff is just so far outside my register I can't even process it properly.

I think my background in metal is one of the biggest reasons a lot of my tastes are out of sync with the majority of RM.

I was alwaysin the GNR camp when it came to developing tastes in music. It was either Guns N Roses or Metallica, i swayed more to the Rock n Roll side of heavier music.

In broad terms, I'm right there with you. But I can't begin to explain how much I prefer Metallica to GNR.

i wouldn't say this in public, but since RM is a safe place: I never liked Metallica, even when they were good. I really only like early 80s/70s metal and the new retro-metal that shamelessly copies it. The rest I could trash.

I'll occasionally listen to a mix I made of songs from the first 5 Metallica albums. If I'm in the right mood it still rocks pretty hard.

Master of Puppets and And Just For All are two good rippers, f'sure. I don't skip tracks from the Black album when onshuffle, but I turn down the volume in the car at red lights. Don't want anyone to hear me blasting Unforgiven.

The Black Album is fucking terrible. Overblown production, shitty lyrics by Hetfield and simple song structures that betray the power and grace of early Metallica.

I unapologetically love every Metallica album up through "Garage Inc."; I get off the wagon with the symphony thing, and haven't listened to anything since then.

I have no good excuse for this but there it is.
