Granted, I don't know why artists record "new" studio versions of anything. I'm sure there are exceptions but it's always struck me as a somewhat ludicrous practice.
Even Flow with Dave A is the only worthwhile PJ one that comes to mind.

I have the alt version. I got it on itunes at some point. Possibly related to the Dead Man Walking soundtrack? My computer is currently down so I can't check.
I think there is another version out there that's different from the Original and alt version on Ridley's comp. I remember a few years ago someone posting a link to an acoustic studio version. I don't think it was actually an acoustic recording, but the guitar tone was definitely different. I thought that was the version Rid was using for the comp. But I just compared the original and the alt version, and their guitars seem identical. Does anyone else remember this version or am I losing my mind?

EDIT: I think my library was mislabeled. Guitars definitely sound different on the original and alt version. But I could have swore there was a different "acoustic" version also released a few years ago.

I can definitely understand the motivation, from a musician's perspective, of wanting to record an already-released song again. There's times where the original recording of a song either just didn't quite match up to the vision you had for it or where the passage of time gives you a different perspective of what you think a studio recording could achieve. Even Flow is a good example; I recall Jeff saying at the time that the band felt as though the 1991 studio version fell short of what they wanted to do with the song, it didn't "have the right groove" or something (even though I think the album version is actually superior to the 1992 Abbruzzese take).

As far as I know, Robert Smith is still re-recording parts from the Cure's 2008 album hoping he can release a 'new' version with a different tracklisting, new mixes, new lyrics, etc. It was announced last year but still hasn't come out. It's akin to Pearl Jam not releasing anything since S/T but still sitting in a studio tinkering with those songs, hoping to get the 'finished' version out at some point (despite it having already been released years ago). I very much understand that kind of obsessiveness with completing something to the standard you've set yourself, even if it seems like a waste of creative energy in many respects.

I can absolutely understand it -- between the ages of 18 and 25 I wrote and recorded music incessantly, and I hate about 95% of it now. The problem is that there's no end to how many adjustments you can make to a song -- and what sounds good today won't sound good tomorrow, so then you'll need a third version, and so on. All the while, you're busy nitpicking, and the original version that you've deemed substandard is out there being absorbed into people's lives and becoming a part of your story. I admire an artist who can let his or her decisions stand as a reflection of where he or she was at the time and move forward (and for the record, I feel the same way about after-the-fact remixes and the like as well -- "no, really, this is what we intended the album to sound like 25 years ago, and now it's FINALLY COMING OUT AS WE INTENDED" -- it's just not something that excites me).

Also, I will confess that for many years I just assumed the "Even Flow" re-record was a live version, similar to the RKCNDY version of "Alive" used in the video for that song. By the time I realized it was a studio version, it was already etched on my brain.

As long as an artist doesn't do this at the expense of new material I generally enjoy new takes on old songs. Even an inferior take can reilluminate forgotten strengths and hidden virtues of songs that can become overly familiar.

And I used to be a Dave A even flow guy but in recent years I've come back to probably preferring the original- or at least the Ten remix version.

That's what live performances are for -- go out there, reinvent, reinterpret, indulge in your momentary impulses, exercise your 20/20 hindsight. Release the live recording if you like the result. I guarantee it will feel more vital and engaging than going into the studio and trying to "fix" an old recording, and will almost definitely have a better chance of causing a listener to say, "Hey, you know, I actually like this better than the original."

You beat me to it KD - that's what I love about live performance, and something that has kept me interested in PJ all these years (even if most of their live versions peaked around 1998-2000).

I think Ed feels the same way (about his early stuff, not yours :P). He re-records at every opportunity - e.g. they could have easily rearranged the original 'Release' for Out of The Furnace.

Thanks again for this, the EV Discs are awesome, I notice one song that could be added, the version of Croon Spoon with Kim Gordon singing, Ed played it on his Pearl Jam Radio Special and also, may be right to include The Golden State

Also, there are a number of live tracks that may be worth to include such as A Quick One whith My Morning Jacket, Slow Night So Long with Kings Of Leon, Man On The Moon and Begin the Begin with R.E.M., Anyway You Want It withe the Ramones, The Doors Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame songs, I'm The One and Let See Action with The Who, the live tracks with Pete Townshend in Chicago, and much more there are lying around... but maybe they're more suited for an EV live collaborations compilation.

Thanks again

The Golden State (all 3 versions of it!) are coming on Discs 3-4 (2008-2015)

I didn't know about that Kim Gordon version of Croon Spoon - will have to check it out (but it won't be included on this comp as it is not officially released).

Happy to report all of those are on Discs 5-7 (Guest Live Appearances), except Slow Night So Long and Begin The Begin (two of my favourites) as they have not been officially released.

No interest in the extended versions of the Nusrat songs from the DMW score? Face of Love clocks in over 10 minutes and Long Road is nearly 17.

Those obscenely long versions will appear on a pair of bonus discs (1 PJ + 1 EV) called 'For the Serious Collector'.

Post by ridleybradout »

EV discs 3 and 4 are now ready.

Disc 3 is a really nice flowing listen of predominantly acoustic and down tracks :nice:

Disc 4 is obviously a work in progress - it's been a dry spell for EV solo work and collaborations, but hopefully there will some good stuff on the horizon soon.

Quite a few mp3-sourced tracks (original files available), though 'My City Of Ruins' features in lossless here for the first time.

Discs 5-7 will follow soon and contain Ed's guest live appearances spanning 1993-2015.

EV discs 5-7 are now ready.

These discs collect together all of Ed's guest live appearances with other artists.

Many of these tracks were originally on a similarly themed disc on joostone's Innocent Bystander compilation, but others have not been circulated before, at least not in this quality.

These include a number of DVD-sourced tracks, most of them lossless PCM, including two of my all-time favourite non-PJ Ed performances - 'History Never Repeats' with Betchadupa (Liam Finn's old band) and 'The Waiting' with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers :heartbeat:

'The Real Me' with The Who from May this year is currently mp3-sourced, if anyone can provide a FLAC upgrade that would be very much appreciated

EDIT:

EV Disc 5-7 have now been updated to include the following:

EV with C Average, Tibetan Freedom Concert, Alpine Valley 1999-06-13 (from Westwood One: Show #99-50 promo CD)
- Watch Outside (Monomen cover)
- Runnin' Out Of Time (Dead Moon cover)
- Diamonds In The Rough (Dead Moon cover)

Simon Townshend with EV, Triple Door Seattle, 2014-04-23 (from FLAC bootleg release on http://www.simontownshend.com)
- She Asked Me
- I'm The Answer

Many thanks to JasonA for alerting me to these. The C Average tracks are particularly great - Ed at the height of his powers :bammer:

Additional artwork files now included for a 2CD + 1CD version of these discs as requested :)
