Schedule has been going quite well with running four out of seven days... until this week, this week has been utterly atrocious and I have a feeling it is the weather getting to me. I've also forgotten my hat, Garmin has lost satellite and other shit so hoping just an off week. You probably could have rung a few cups of sweat out of my clothes on Wednesday morning when I got back.
Yeah, I've had a few 100+ degree runs recently that weren't fun. Typically those runs aren't terrible out here as long as you carry some water, but PHX has had a dose of humidity this year, which makes those runs suck ass.
I happily ditched my Garmin a few years ago. I only use one now to measure a route's distance or if I'm gonna time some fartlek intervals.

I really don't mind the heat at all but the 76 degrees and 96% humidity at 4:30 am I wasn't enthused. I have yet to run with water and have yet to drop water along my long runs beforehand... I've just felt like running unencumbered recently. This week is only nine miles so I may still do that but the following week will be fourteen, staying in Jersey near a twenty-two mile paved trail so I'll try and do an out and back crossing over a water-drop at the start. I've enjoyed planning the longer routes, I just need to actually plan and do a bit more than run them.
I'm still working on ironing out my pace and uploading the data to Strava has been nice with the Garmin.

Trail tomorrow.
I'd be happy with that time... of course that's me. My house is on the local half marathon route, I looked at the map and it is the most convoluted 13.1 miles I've ever seen; over twelve will be fun to plan and I bet I can tweak a more enjoyable half.
Finished up my shittiest week of miles strong, really enjoyed my nine today... weather was pretty much perfect with a nice breeze, even running in to it.
I'm gonna use Hal Higdon's Advanced 1 plan for training for the Tucson Marathon. I'll probably bump up some of the mileage, but stick with the basics of the plan: Easy running Monday through Wednesday. Hills or tempo on Thursday. Rest on Friday. Race pace on Saturday. Then long run on Sunday. I've always liked doing tempo and long runs on back to back days. I may throw in some fartleks on Tuesday or Wednesday.
I would actually spring for the $10 cell phone app, but he's only got his beginner and intermediate plans available.
Did two loops on my favorite trail yesterday. Got out too late and died on my second loop. First loop in 65, second in 79. Saw 3 rattlers. It was 100+ degrees when I finished.

So much for sticking to my training plan.
Every mile is some sort of progress I suppose...
I've been good in sticking to my schedule, especially the weekend runs for just that reason; just about every Saturday I've found myself saying "goddamn am I glad I got my run in early." Plans the next two weekends will be a test, thankfully the lady is training for some crazy cycle event and we're both pretty serious about our events.
I've been thinking of adding some calories as I've found myself much hungrier before regular meals, which I suppose would make sense since my mileage is increasing. Also started riding a bike as cross on Sundays... every bit of pain will make me a better runner right?

Yes, pain and suffering makes you a better runner... and person.
Did mile repeats yesterday on the treadmill. 6-minute miles with 2 minutes of rest in between. 6 reps. It really pushed me and I was fucking wiped out afterwards. Felt a niggle in my right knee last night and switch to the NB Fresh Foams for my long run this morning just in case. 15 miles in 1:54. I ended up running with my Nathan hydration pack because most of the canal water fountains still aren't working. The canals were fucking packed with runners again. I probably saw 200 to 300 runners this morning.
Both of us got out on the road for our longer treks, however my plan to stay on the urban trail were sacrificed around a mile out; I lost the next entrance and just said "fuck it, I'll run along the coast." This seemed like a good idea as I do enjoy running along the water, it was another thing to experience portions of New Jersey that are still in complete disrepair from hurricane Sandy. I wasn't breaking any records pace wise but it was a contemplative run, I eventually hooked a right back inland and realized I had absolutely no idea where I was. Never stopped moving but the lack of placement was a bit disconcerting, especially without any water and running solely on a GU at the onset. A solid fourteen miles, bested my half time by 6+ minutes so I was pretty happy with that but I definitely could have finished stronger... always next week.
Felt like a solid fifteen mile effort this past Saturday, shaved about a minute off my half time as well. This coming weekend was the recommended half-marathon from Higdon so I'll run my town's half that was put on in May, should be fun to solely focus on that distance with two solid weeks behind me.
Also signed on to a Ragnar team for next year, looks like it should be a good time.
Training has been sketchy. I got food poisoning over Labor Day weekend and I was pretty much in bed for two full days. Yesterday was the first day I really felt 100% and I did 10 miles in 73 minutes. I got out too late and it was 95 and humid already.
My Higdon plan is kinda out the window at this point, but I'll try to stick with its basic principles of tempo run mid-week, race pace on Saturday and long run on Sunday.

We do what we can, good luck
Whatever high I was on after this weekend has been obliterated, got my mid-week run in but have felt totally fucked (mentally and physically) for the other days. Last week was 100% solid and I think my gains may have taken a toll along with a weekend of the lady visiting and a real good friend's destination wedding. Looking to add a few more calories to my diet and also some water drops on my long runs... starting next week.
Woke up late yesterday and just felt drained. I'm half-way to running a marathon and if you looked at me yesterday you'd question if they were my first miles on the road. I felt I was going to pass out twice and bagged it at eight miles and I'm still pissed about it, but I figured listening to my body was better than setting my training back. Also looking in to a CamelBak since zero hydration on a long run is not something I want to do any longer.
Some good head-clearing cycle miles today and I'm headed to the grocery store to stock up... 2700 calories doesn't seem to be cutting it any longer.

You should really look at the Nathan pack I posted in the accessories thread. It's fantastic and only $70.

That looks pretty solid and would probably be a good idea for future trail jaunts and the Ragnar. Thanks man.
Decided to break down my diet and found that lunch is clearly where I'm lacking, would also explain my midday energy dive; I cut down my caffeine consumption by about 80-85% about a month ago so my midday drag is also bit more pronounced. Any good recs on 300-400 calories of quick consumption?
Training has been solid this week. I've been getting up at 5 and running my 10-mile canal route every day. Yesterday I did about 45 minutes of hills afterwards and I'm feeling it today. The canals have been packed with runners and cyclists. My effort has been pretty easy (other than the hill work) and I've been finishing most runs in 72 or 73 minutes. Looking forward to hitting a trail this weekend.
I want to get back into running but the prospect of running long distances in the cold once I get my stamina built back up is not very enticing. I should have started in the early spring.

My friends in Flagstaff all swear by a thermal/compression base with a light-weight jacket and shorts. They routinely run in sub-freezing weather. 2XU's stuff is expensive, but probably worth the investment.
