I really enjoyed the album she released last year. Eclectic.

LP1 is great, but M3LL155X is a revelation. In Time could be the track of the year.

Yeah, I dunno. Not feeling this. It doesn't dig under my skin and move me like it seems to want to. It has the sound, but not the melody. Not the actual songwriting. I'd rather listen to Grimes or M.I.A. or Bat for Lashes.

Re: FKA twigs
The songwriting is solid. It's pretty clear to me that she could write super "hooky" choruses with more melodies. But she goes for subtlety and mood instead. I dig it.

Fair enough, though I'm not as convinced of solidity of the songwriting, or that it's just "subtle." Mostly it just sounds kind of noisy, like she's trying really hard to be atmospheric and moody. It comes across like a lot of attempt and not a lot of follow-through. That probably would have been okay with me when I was younger, but now I get bored by moody atmospherics if they're not attached to memorable melodies/songs/hooks; so many other artists can capture this tone/sound without sacrificing that. But I get why someone would disagree; I know our tastes are very different, t2b.

It also doesn't help that I think her lyrics are kind of terrible.

Re: FKA twigs
First, there are plenty of memorable melodies and hooks in her songs. If you can't hear those, then I don't know what to say other than I would question how much of her stuff you have actually heard. My comment previously was about how she can skew traditional choruses. To me, she uses her music a lot like Bjork does sometimes in that she uses tonal shifts to create the hooks instead of just repeating a phrase over and over again.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Fair enough, though I'm not as convinced of solidity of the songwriting, or that it's just "subtle." I don't know what to say about "It comes across like a lot of attempt and not a lot of follow-through." Can you be more specific? It sounds like you just don't dig it, which is fine.
Your comment about her lyrics is probably your most valid criticism to me. They can come across as immature at times. But I'm a 42-year-old mostly-white dude and tend to cringe at some of the sexual stuff in her lyrics.

Oh, I'm only talking about the new EP. I haven't heard anything else.turned2black wrote:First, there are plenty of memorable melodies and hooks in her songs. If you can't hear those, then I don't know what to say other than I would question how much of her stuff you have actually heard.
It reminds me of stuff I used to write when I was younger, when I was so concerned with capturing a certain mood or idea that I didn't bother to establish an actual song beneath the noise. So when I listen to this, I feel like I'm just hearing that attempt, that fixation on capturing a certain something, but not a well-constructed song to carry that. Again, it might just be an issue of personal taste, because that's not necessarily good or bad, but like I said, these days I definitely want that song to go with it. But I know we also disagree about the "hookiness" (or lack thereof). For the record, I have never heard any Bjork that sounded as unmemorable and formless as this - she always has a strong sense of melody and composition.I don't know what to say about "It comes across like a lot of attempt and not a lot of follow-through." Upon further reflection, I think a lot of this would be somewhat palliated if I thought her lyrics/themes were interesting or insightful, but I definitely don't think they are. That video is pretty awful, too.

I would say that I was lukewarm on to in love with LP1 for a week or two last year, with the record having mediocre lows but really high highs. I'm excited to check this out. I had no idea it was coming.
