If the first couple tracks are any indication, I will not be one of them.

Haha, I actually don't think they are a good indication. Nothing else on the album sounds like the opener, and it gets progressively dreamier and trippier as it goes. It's a Psychedelic Pop record.

I will give it a proper listen later on. I do love the Lips, but have to confess that I find their collaborative projects with various pop figures to be more or less a waste of time, and I've never found Miley's obscene my-life-is-my-art-project crusade to amount to anything more than a tabloid spectacle -- beneath all the glitz and bullshit, she is a decent singer (she did a Dylan cover a few years back that was beautiful), but I can't recall hearing a single song from her that's been half as exciting as the big production she's making out of it suggests it ought to be. Consider me tentatively intrigued by this.

I tried. I got through maybe half of it (though I was skipping around pretty liberally towards the end). Sorry, I don't get it. Perfunctory Lips backing, forgettable songwriting, and exactly what you'd expect from Miley -- a lot of references to her liking to get fucked up, something about sucking milk out of someone's nipple, that sorta thing.

To me she just seems like a young girl going through a typical albeit delayed teen rebellion on an atypically large budget. I'm with Strat -- I'm too old for this shit (not that I can think of any point in my life until now when I'd have felt differently).

I'm not sure it's fair to dismiss what Miley does as mere "teenage rebellion" unless we're also prepared to dismiss what Madonna did as that, or what the entire punk rock movement did as that. I think that's a bit reductive. All of these are linked to a deeper, political expression of identity and autonomy. That's what I find exciting about Miley as an individual and a pop culture figure.

But I also simply enjoy the pop music she makes, and I think that might be our biggest point of disagreement. Which is perfectly fine.

Demi Lovato's "Cool for the Summer" is my favorite pop song since probably Bat for Lashes's "Daniel". I can't stop playing it.

Is Embryonic one of those two? I've heard really good things about that. I should probably check out what they've been up to; I haven't heard anything since At War with the Mystics, which I remember liking.
