I have not checked out the Flaming Lips Dark Side of the Moon album. I should.

Or see them live.

I paid a good coin to see them at the Belly Up tavern in Aspen last winter. Very small bar. A handful of songs I began to love but they clicked for me after seeing them live. In a tiny bar.

So, thats something.
I wish I could see every band in a tiny bar.
High Violet didn't grab me initially, then I saw their album release gig at BAM... they work some magic over the listener while performing. I'm sure they'll do a handful of New York gigs for the next tour/album release, hopefully it isn't the Barclays again, but even if that's the only one you can attend: just do it.

I must see the National when they are the headliner. Saw them open for Arcade Fire.

This was my first National concert. I put the whole concert on youtube. Closing with "About Today". :heartbeat: :heartbeat: Saw them three times now and it was wonderful each time.
Oh hey, the last time I saw them is on youtube as well.

I'm not as enthusiastic about The National as everyone else is (I think they're good, but nowhere near the best band out there), but my god, "Mistaken for Strangers", "Abel", and "Mr. November" are fantastic songs. Every track on High Violet is very good, too.

It's just the vibe I get, LV -- the deepest "expression of autonomy" evident to me in this music is that of a young girl who spent her actual teen years playing a squeaky-clean character on a kids' show and is now disproportionately impressed by how people respond to sexuality and curse words. Clearly she's not taking herself too seriously and that's a good thing. But musically it ranges from "nothing special" to "idiotic," and if repurposing phallic objects as lewd stage props is somehow significant or "political" then my friends from 8th grade were way, way ahead of their time.

Though for what it's worth, I find Madonna's music generally terrible, and find about 95% of pure dyed-in-the-wool punk rock to be patently ridiculous. So...I dunno.
