You probably loved his other hit (kinda) song- being Canned Heat- the song that Napoleon Dynamite is dancing to at the end.

I also really like Black Capricorn Day and Deeper Underground (from the Godzilla 98 soundtrack). He also had a song called "Feels Just Like It Should" that I think was on an ATT commercial about 5 years ago.

[I'm not sure it's fair to dismiss what Miley does as mere "teenage rebellion" unless we're also prepared to dismiss what Madonna did as that, or what the entire punk rock movement did as that.

It's just the vibe I get, LV -- the deepest "expression of autonomy" evident to me in this music is that of a young girl who spent her actual teen years playing a squeaky-clean character on a kids' show and is now disproportionately impressed by how people respond to sexuality and curse words. Clearly she's not taking herself too seriously and that's a good thing. But musically it ranges from "nothing special" to "idiotic," and if repurposing phallic objects as lewd stage props is somehow significant or "political" then my friends from 8th grade were way, way ahead of their time.

Here's the thing though: things people do in real life don't always reflect what is considered acceptable in the culture. I'm not very familiar with Madonna's catalog, but her (in)famous "Like a Virgin" performance at the 1984 VMAs is, in my estimation, a seminal pop culture moment. To this day, it's still hilarious, audacious, and powerful. I think it's important to normalize sexuality - especially female sexuality - in our often-still-puritanical society, and every time someone like Elvis gyrates or someone like Madonna writhes across a stage or someone like Miley uses a prop phallus on national TV, the dial moves just a little bit forward. I think that's great. I think that's important.

For the record, Miley's efforts in this area go further than just televised antics - she's done a lot of great work for LGBT youth and feminist causes, and not just in terms of activism and charity, but in terms of using her cultural influence to normalize and promote acceptance and understanding. And I think her art and persona incorporate and express what she believes in. Which, again, I think is great.

I am old because ultimately when it comes down to antics and publicity, if you dont have the songs to back it up then gtfo. That being said, I just dont like the songs. Everything sounds the fucking same to me so maybe that is the difference between Madonna and everyone else out these days.

How is it fascinating or culturally relevant? Its been done repeatedly for decades. No one cares. It doesn't move any needles. She's just the latest in a long line of clones.

Not to mention she takes the idea of empowerment and uses that power to create something truly ugly and selfish. There isn't anything noble about her.
