Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Sorry buddy - I tried.
I'm in the Rangi camp so far. If there was a version with less auto tune and less bullshit I'd probably appreciate the song a bit more. It left me angry that I wasn't listening to Justin by himself so I'm now playing Bon Iver.
Maybe you guys should try "Power". You get to hear his production and composition at its best, and some of his most introspective and insightful lyrics. And it's autotune-free!
Power was certainly the better song!

Yeah, Lost in the World was not for me. I did like Power a bit more, though.

Tried listening to a bit more Kanye throughout the day - had to put on some Nas to cleanse the pallet.
Might come back and give it another go at some point, but at this stage I still don't get the praise for Kanye - his flow feels really amateurish

Thats because it is. There is no comparison between nas and kanye in terms of flow. When I listen to Kanye I just try and enjoy the production....which is easy to do.

True. But some of the weak beats and production on Nas' albums make them almost unlistenable.

I felt the same way at first. But the "click" comes when you stop thinking of Kanye in the restrictive terms of hip-hop (beat/production and rap) and start thinking in terms of music. Kanye is more than just a "rapper;" he's a vocalist. And he has an impeccable ear for inflection and delivery. His vocals match the themes and tone of whatever part of any song he's singing. He's not going to give you the intense, technical flows of someone like Nas - he gives so much more. (Not knocking Nas; he's great.)

Yeah as an album artist Kanye is much more consistent. Outside of Illmatic of course.

I feel like I remember posting something to this effect in the old Kanye thread, but I think of Kanye as a rapper similar to how I think of Bob Dylan as a singer, or Miles Davis as a trumpeter, or Thelonious Monk as a pianist -- pitted against the technical masters on their respective instruments. the rough edges are obvious, but they all possess their own kind of raw expressiveness that fits singularly into what they do. LV is right that Kanye really does have a knack for pitching his voice to a line, a particular phrase, or even a huh? -- there is a musicality to it that plays by its own rules...

So over the last few months I've been trying to give Kanye a chance. I usually try to progress through an artist's discography a little at a time otherwise I usually end up giving up. So far I like Graduation and Late Registration. College Dropout is fine. I dislike 808, but I only listened to it a few times. It did absolutely nothing for me. Should I keep trying or should I skip to a different album and come back later?

Definitely check out My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. 808s took some time for me.
