It's interesting to me that Ed seems to be such a big fan of the later, rock opera-era The Who. I always felt like those albums were when their music got to be fairly bloated and bland, yet Ed seems to relish those songs...It'd be like that guy from Gaslight Anthem absolutely loving Lightning Bolt.

I think of Backspacer fitting in with Face Dances, since both are poppy attempts to redefine the band's sound. Plus, The Fixer could probably fit alongside You Better You Bet in a playlist.

Lightning Bolt is more like if The Who had made a record that tried to call back to all of their previous works and play to all their previous strengths, and they'd made it 25 years into their career...which would be 1990.

I can't fathom calling The Who on Quadrophenia bland.

I haven't listened to Lightning Bolt all the way through in a long time. I think it's "good" and I "like" it, but I'm frustrated by the production and the lack of vision/ambition.

Pearl Jam is still my "favorite" band, and I think Matt Cameron was a "great addition." Also, Ed's voice has only "gotten better" with age.

Allow me to backpedal a bit...I think parts of Quadrophenia are amazing, but some of it is bloated (Cut My Hair?! Come on...). I think Tommy is quite bland.

My problem with rock opera The Who is that they took all the raw strengths of their first few albums, and gussied them up with a bunch of synthesizers and other embellishments. While PJ hasn't made a proper rock opera yet (dear God, don't let this ever happen...), that move towards more production and tighter performances has sucked a lot of the energy out of the songs. I guess that's the comparison I was trying to make.

"Cut My Hair" is awesome. Zoot suit, white jacket with side vents five inches long. Fuckin' great.

Pearl Jam should most definitely make a rock opera. Dear Apollo, please let this happen.

I'm pretty ho-hum about post-Live At Leeds Who but I'll second that Cut My Hair is great, the high point of Quadrophenia for me (which I don't enjoy very much generally).
