You could probably argue something from Garth Brooks or Shania Twain. They were huge and leaked into the mainstream for quite a long time.

I generally think of the nineties in three parts: grunge (early), gangsat rap (mid), and boybands/popprincesses (late), but this thread has opened my eyes to the current of blandness that kinda rode over the top of those eras.
