Townes is more frequently filed under "folk," I think -- but I agree, he's a great songwriter.

Good point. I posted that and I thought he might be more folky. His first few albums are pretty country before he went more bluesy/folky in the 70s.

He's borderline. There's a lot of overlap between the two genres, especially when the singer sounds like as big of a hick as Townes does.

good job burt..I'll dig into this at some point and show my love for waylon, don williams, conway twitty, merle haggard, tom t hall, george jones, loretta lynn, roger miller, ronnie mislap, charlie pride, charlie rich, mel tillis, etc..
