I'm going to go out on a limb and say that "Live At Leeds" is the only truly great album The Who ever made. The first three albums are an acquired taste (sort of like The Kinks but without the good songwriting). "Tommy" has some interesting musical things going on but it's totally ponderous, "Who's Next" is very good but overplayed to the max a'la "Zeppelin 4" and "Dark Side Of The Moon", and everything after that is extremely dull and/or overlong. I think "Slip Kid" is their best post-Leeds song, but that's only an opinion.

Also, it's fucking annoying when videos have one channel of audio, which is impossible to listen to with headphones. Thanks assholes.

Leeds is great, but I think that first record (The Who Sings My Generation) is really something special. Sell Out would be less of an acquired taste if it didn't have all the faux advertisements.

The first album is pretty cool, but Pete's songwriting is pretty dismal, apart from "My Generation" and "The Kids Are Alright". He was not nearly as prolific as say, The Beatles or The Kinks, but he was about equal to the Stones in that department...it was more about image and being a badass than actually writing a good tune (at first, anyway)...not that there's anything wrong with that.

A few years back Pearl Jam put a handful of videos like that on their website. When I played them on my phone it just downloaded the video files instead of streaming them.

I wonder what the rationale behind putting those videos on the website was? From memory, they were only up for a pretty short while before they took them down. What I'd give for soundboard copies of all of those shows, so glad in particular to have that Animal performance from Adelaide (my first show and only time I saw them with Jack).

Its performances like this that have made me love this band unconditionally. Also, I have a feeling when the tell all book comes out when they are dead - this will be the performance that vedder states ruined his voice for good. It was all downhill since this but goddamnit was it worth it.

That's THE fucking rock band. The real deal. It was great to watch that again just now. I remember when that show aired, seeing that performance "live" blew me away. I was high on it for days. I had dvr'd the performance and watched it back for weeks (maybe months). It was so great in every aspect. The band was as tight as it's ever been. They were spectacular, maybe even flawless. Even so, Ed stole the show. He was brilliant. A master of his craft at the absolute pinnacle of his ability. The look he gives just after they finish "Love, Reign..." says it all. Those vocal performances are as good as it gets. Absolute perfection. It still gives me chills. This is the band I love too, strat. It's fun to be reminded of how great they truly were.

most importantly, i believe it was the inspiration for this timeless portrait.

On a related note, the doc on the Who's managers is magnificent and worth watching. Chris Stamp is hilarious.

Even the managers of other bands get better docos than our guys.

For a band that's been around for nearly 25 years, there's a remarkable lack of real insight about their interpersonal dynamic. There are some oblique references in PJ20, but it's never explored in detail.

I would love to see all the extra footage that Pellington, Clinch, Crowe, et al have laying around. I'd be most interested in their writing process and interaction, which, after all these years and interviews, is still shrouded in mystery for me.

I mean, wouldn't it be great to see them argue and hash out arrangements for No Code or Binaural? Would kill for something akin to the access that Springsteen gave Thom Zimny on Wings for Wheels and The Promise.
