Soundgarden - King Animal -

When a band is but a fraction of Pearl Jam, but they aren't zero Pearl Jam.

It's the mid tempo middle of the record that sort of blends into one track. I really need to listen to this with an amazing stereo I'm sure. The record leaves me wanting more. BMFinger had similar sounds throughout but it had such strong melodies.

And SU and DOTU had beautiful snares and drum sounds.

Yes. 'Monkeys might get the axe' is not strong enough. They're awful. You should be ashamed you ever considered them alongside Soundgarden.
Fuck, they're not awful at all, had a much better decade than Cornell. Anyway what sucks is that I wanted to see them but they're not gonna beat Soundgarden...more of an I wish they were playing on different nights so I could see them both.

I was being antagonistic for fun. But still, 'had a much better decade than Cornell' isn't really a gauge for anything. For the last decade, a band that has existed has had a much better decade than a band that hasn't? During the 40s, Frank Sinatra was having a better decade than Ann Frank. Means nothing.

Agreed. Though everyone hates the drum sound on BMF (with good reason), I love the guitars on that album. Total hugeness.

The lustre of King Animal has dimmed somewhat for me. That isn't to say it's a bad record, I still think it's a very respectable effort and there's nothing even slightly embarrassing about anything on there, but I have more issues with it in retrospect than I did on initial release. By Crooked Steps, A Thousand Days Before, Blood on the Valley Floor and (especially) Rowing are really killer Soundgarden songs, the rest are OK to pretty good - all things considered, that's still a decent ratio.

The main stumbling block with me is the production: it's that same boxy, somewhat lifeless sound I associate with Kasper's work on Songs for the Deaf and Pearl Jam's self-titled record (and, to a certain extent, Vedder's solo material and Cat Power's You Are Free.) I'd love to see them work with someone new on their next record, when/if that happens.

(Kasper also royally fucked up the live album; it's virtually unlistenable.)

'95 Soundgarden show: sign me the fuck up. '13 Soundgarden show: Cornell's had long stretches of sounding like shit for years. That's more of what I was going for. More trepidation there on the likely quality of the two shows.

Speaking as somebody who owns virtually every Soundgarden bootleg in existence, they're much better live now than they were in 1995. They were completely hit and miss the last three years before they broke up. There were a lot of mediocre to bad shows, and the setlists were cookie-cutter.

Go see them this week. You won't regret it!

i wish i could...i saw cornell solo three times and one time in pj20 and he was incredible...even if he is known for being a hit or miss kinda singer, since 2007 he has been on a steady run of awesomeness...With Temple Of The Dog his whole presence was a just "holy fuck" moment.

Well, I dunno about you, but I'd rather go to a Frank Sinatra concert than an Anne Frank concert.

Show last night:

Searching with My Good Eye Closed
Jesus Christ Pose
By Crooked Steps
Let Me Drown
Attrition
Loud Love
Ugly Truth
Get on the Snake
Non-State Actor
Live to Rise
Worse Dreams
Been Away Too Long
The Day I Tried to Live
Ty Cobb
Hunted Down
Fell on Black Days
Blow Up the Outside World
Blood on the Valley Floor
Burden in My Hand
Head Down
Rusty Cage
Encore:
Spoonman
Outshined
Rhinosaur
Rowing

The band was really tight and Matt is a monster on these songs. However, my favorite venue in Connecticut redid their ceiling and took away the baffles. Chris' voice sounded far too overpowering and it was echoing like a motherfucker. I was really quite upset by this during the show and it is a huge problem with the facility now. Not fucking happy.

My friend caught the Pittsburgh show. I'd die for a setlist this mixed up. The handful of gigs I've seen have mostly been pretty stock.

Incessant Mace
Hunted Down
Ty Cobb
Live to Rise
Non-State Actor
Eyelid's Mouth
Halfway There
Room a Thousand Years Wide
Spoonman
By Crooked Steps
Flower
Outshined
Rusty Cage
A Thousand Days Before
Pretty Noose
Burden in My Hand
Blow Up the Outside World
Fell on Black Days
Superunknown
Fresh Tendrils
4th of July

Encore:
Been Away Too Long
My Wave
Black Hole Sun
Rowing
I might be able to get to an E-bow.

I'm really impressed by Cornell's voice on this record. It's so much stronger than I was anticipating.

I was pretty shocked. I'm very amped for this show.
