Right Song/Wrong Album: Backspacer

Post by stip »

What songs on Backspacer would you like to have heard recorded for other albums? What should have been on Backspacer?

Right Song/Wrong Album
Ten
Vs
Vitalogy
No Code
Yield
Binaural
Riot Act

I would have liked to hear Got Some on almost any other record. A really good song that sounds too thin and anemic with Eddie's staggly vocals. Force of Nature would have been great on Vs. or Ten (the power and heart on sleeve sincerity call back to those records) and Amongst the Waves would have benefited from the lushness of Yield.

Speed of Sound on No Code would have been nice with a more subdued (but not totally stripped down) arrangement.

This is probably a good call.

The song might benefit from that, but the album wouldn't. It's way too friendly and McCartney-melodied a song for No Code.

Well Pendulum was from Backspacer sessions although I can't get it to fit in with Backspacer as it was presented. I can retrack Backspacer a little knowing that they bring songs forward Pendulum, Parting Ways, Brain Of J I am sure there are a few more and come up with a 2009 Pearl Jam album that looks like this
1.Pendulum
2.Got Some
3.Johny Guitar
4.Setting Forth
5.Force Of Nature
6.Let It Ride
7.Cold Confession
8.Unthought Known
9.Just Breathe
10.Speed Of Sound
12.Gonna See My Friends
13.The End
12. Hidden track The Fixer
Got Some

I have an easy enough time imagining it in the spot occupied by Off He Goes

Yes great point. This is EXACTLY why I love Backspacer. I love the tossed off and lighthearted quality of alot of Lost Dogs. At the time I felt like getting a whole album of that feeling would be great, but only as long the band was feelin it. It turned out they were, and it came unexpectedly w/ Fixer. Lost Dogs was a promise of a potential the band kinda hid from the public, and Backspacer fulfilled the promise. I see Backspacer as a companion to Lost Dogs. Except it did one better and made it a "quickie" record you can play start to finish on your daily drive. Backspacer gives me lots of memories of just driving to work or wherever, and having an album you can just put on and let go and it's almost done before you even realize what hit you. Most albums I have from anyone I can't do that cause they are either too long or too heavy-handed. My teen self in 1994 would never have imagine this in my wildest dreams. Also, yeah, Ole too.

Is it too "hipster" to say that I think Backspacer would have been better with Ole and Let the Records Play on it? The folks that made those observations are on point! Good work, team.

I can see the musical fit, but I think the rough edges S/T would have given that song would undermine its looser charms
