It was really good. I wanted to wait to see it in 2D, but my girlfriend wanted to see it in 3D. I didn't think the 3D added anything, but it's definitely one of those movies to see in the theater.

The director actually said that Everest is not based on Krakauers book.

Everest's director has quite vehemently denied Into Thin Air as inspiration for his film. Baltasar Kormákur told Entertainment Weekly that he "wasn't that interested in telling a story about a writer on a mountain." That's been done before, he added. Everest is inspired by multiple sources — Kormákur said that Krakauer's book is too one-sided, and he hoped to "humanize" all of the climbers involved in the disaster. The film isn't about laying blame or "creating a villain." And to that end, Kormákur used multiple sources to inform how he portrayed each of the climbers, their motivations, and their actions.

yep, that was very apparent to me right away. not only was he not featured much at all, but he seemed like kind of a tool. whereas Anatoli was not the 'villain' he was portrayed as being in Kraukaer's book.

i want to read Anatoli and Beck's books now.

Yeah, I expected them to take liberties with the story. Anyone seeking a real taste of mountaineering should really watch one of several great documentaries or a "docudrama" like "Touching the Void".

I actually think they didn't take enough liberties with the story. A lot of the tension gets broken because they tried to follow the timeline of events too closely AND tried to focus on too many characters. And to be honest, I didn't find the cinematography any better than National Geographic's "Everest" series.

Touching the Void was so excellent. Saw that in theaters years ago and I just couldn't believe the events that happened and the tension between those two still to this day. Amazing story. one of the films that brought my fascination and love of the mountains to the point of needing to live in them.
