I wasn't feeling it and gave up about 4 tracks in. Though, I was listening at work without headphones, and this probably would be a lot better in the car or on the couch with some headphones on.

Honestly, I could see most people hating it. It's so quiet and kinda lazy.
I just dig the drama and melancholy of it all. And her vocals are superb.

And the little instrument, the tiny hidden arrangements that sneak up on you. There's a lot of subtlety. So, yeah, K, listen with headphones.

I'm listening to my iPod on shuffle and it just transitioned from "Torn into Enthrallment" by Suffocation to "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga.

That Mountain Goats' album about wrestling was a fun listen, but I don't think I'll ever listening to it again.

they were strangely worshipped as Gods in the early 90s. It was overkill.

Re: Post Random Music-Related Thoughts You Have
Beefheart completely changed the way I look at music. "Trout Mask Replica" is a perfect example of an album that sounds completely repulsive the first time you hear it, and then after a few listens it becomes second nature like your brain has been completely rewired. The best way I've been able to describe that album to people is that it's like one of those 3-D things in the funnies, that look like complete nonsense at face value, but then as you focus and adjust, a recognizable 3-D image emerges. It hits some people right away, some after a couple of tries, and some never because they can't discern the patterns. I might be on to something because Beefheart was mainly a painter. Music was his second hobby. Of course, it draws very strong reactions from people because they are either completely blown away when they finally "get it", or so repulsed that they think a trick is being played on them, and they refuse to "waste their time" listening to it ever again. I don't think I ever met anybody who was lukewarm about that album. People either worship it or loathe it outright. All "TMR" review pages are only either 5-star or 1-star reviews. He was the first person to punk'd people with music. A true artistic statement.zeb wrote:I feel like getting into Beefheart.
It is worth mentioning that "Trout Mask" and the following album "Decals" are Beefheart's most avant-garde efforts, and even people who don't enjoy those albums have enjoyed his early R&B and blues material, the swampy and somewhat commercial "Spotlight Kid" and "Clear Spot", the middle-of-the-road albums on Mercury, and his last three albums which are a big melting pot of everything (and more new wave than anything any young new wave groups were doing at the time, except perhaps Television and Talking Heads). Johnny Lydon has said that he started PiL in 1978 because he wanted to be as cool as Beefheart, and he even nicked some band members from him.
