I wonder how much of a credit that is to Pearl Jam as a band. On the one hand, I think there are a lot of people who listened to a lot of PJ growing up and just moved on or branched out over the years, which is natural. But on the other, it does make sense to me that someone who listens thoughtfully to a band like PJ in his or her formative years would be primed to appreciate a pretty broad spectrum of different musical styles when it came time to branch out.
This is somewhat true for myself. I skateboarded a lot as a teenager and the culture introduced me to lots of different musical styles as well as being a musician myself (which I owe to Pearl Jam).
well for me, Pearl Jam music sensibilities brought me a whole different music world...even if their weren t my first band or my favorite band at the beginning.
I listened to Pearl Jam for maybe 6 months. My friend, who is a big fan, linked me to a hilarious discussion on the old old board where Pearl Jam's Lion demolished Kilman for being a pretentious douche. I have been here ever since.

Really? I'm not trying to offend anyone but of all the internet music-related places I visit, I can't think of one that is less diverse than this board.

It feels that way to me, I guess. But I don't frequent many different message boards so maybe I'm wrong.
I may also process the idea of breadth differently than some. I often feel my tastes are relatively broad and then I see some guy on the internet make a numbered list of his 250 favorite albums from the last six months and I just kind of throw my hands in the air.
You have to be joking about not getting a "wave your hands in the air like you just don't care" reference. It's in sitcoms and commercials, for Pete's sake.
