Forgive my lack of knowledge on the subject but how close are we to sending astronauts to mars? From all I gather it would take around 8 months to travel there. I gotta imagine a spaceship is in the works? Whats the hold up already?

Fuel, candidates, no way home.
It'd be a one way mission no way to get the ones willing to go back home.
And no way to keep them alive once they got there.

What a strange few weeks. From hard evidence of water on Mars to 'we found a foggy spot that might be a giant thing made by aliens'. I mean I hope it is a weird mega structure but surely you gather a bunch of evidence or something before announcing?
Unless this is the soft lead in to a by announcement?

It seems like a pretty big stretch to jump to "alien life" because of flicking light from a star. Could be gaseous clouds obstructing our view. Could be going supernova (or some other change).

Doesn't matter what it could be or is or isn't.
What's really strange here is these guys usually make sure they know what something is before they make an announcement about it. I've been sitting imagining some super planet sized solar array with a huge city attached, like off the cover of a bad 70s sci novel. And if it isn't that I'll be pissy.

You need to keep in mind that those sensationalized "could be aliens!" Headlines are taken out of context of very modest articles that state very clearly that "aliens" is at the bottom of their list of possibilities.

Also, I don't think anybody really "announced" anything. It's just some rather shoddy reporting by CNN.

What if we just sent corpses to mars? It's still technically putting people on Mars, isn't it?

That's fucking great, dime, but a Facebook "outlet" or a space-centric news agency is still about as close to a legitimate scientific declaration source as About.com is.dimejinky99 wrote:Wasn't just cnn, all the space/science outlets I follow on FB and online have ran with the same headline all week.
Almost every line in that article that is a direct quote (ie not written and rewritten by someone with a journalism degree) is hesitant and cautious. As it should be.
Science uses expertise to observe and record. The news uses stupidity to falsely summarize.

My bets on a huge amount of rock and debris that never formed or is in the process of forming a planet. Rock fog.

Until a few weeks ago that the estimated 400-metre-wide object was hurtling our way and will get nearly as close to us as the Moon.
