I can't help but think the only time we'd see real moves on this is if it were suddenly random attacks by Islamic extremists. That's the only way gun control and change could be packaged

And that's what I think it will take, when enough people say, "Dude, why the fuck do I even need to pack for self-defense?" As of now, the only way I can see it happening is on a generational basis, when Millennials and the generation after them reach peak power having grown up in a world that's not as violent as it was when their elder generations were in power.

The thing is something is needed to speed up what you're describing. I don't think there is a tragedy big enough to do the trick. I think an actual political effort would. I'm not talking about much stricter laws alone but actually engaging in a serious public discourse that addresses the issue properly. I think even just challenging the status quo on the issue the NRA is so successfully sustaining would achieve a lot.
