Was that an exaggerated limp from wainwright as he walked to the dugout?

That explanation from MLB at least makes sense: the ump called "You're out!" which dissuaded Utley from touching 2nd, therefore he gets the base. The NFL changed similar rules a few years when it comes to fumbles that are originally called incomplete passes or downed runners.

Someone on my Twitter feed pointed out: if you have a gambling addiction or a penis that doesn't work, MLB's advertising partners have some good news for you!

Yeah I don't understand why the "but he never touched second either!" crowd can't grasp this.

That was more of a hip check than a slide so the umpires should have just ruled interference and awarded the double play.

I think I have two questions:

1. If Tejada can crawl over and tag Utley as a "just in case," is he out, even after video review?

2. If they do call interference, can they only count the out at first since he didn't touch the bag?

I'm pretty sure interference call automatically awards both outs. Unless the rule I read on twitter was a forgery.

How long until someone claims MLB wants the Dodgers in the NLCS?

So that was probably the dirtiest slide I've ever seen, if it counts as a "slide". How does MLB condone stuff like that?

In all seriousness, though: if MLB reviews brawls, HBPs, and other stuff to see if players should be suspended or fined, why not slides?

So wouldn't the safe call also dissuade Tejada from tagging Utley? All he had to do was move his arm a little and he tags him, but Utley was already out so why would he? How can you assume a safe call would have changed Utleys actions but not Tejada?

I'm just as weary about that; see my 2-part question above. The "tag the runner just in case" and "touch the bag just in case" have been around forever, as umps could always conference and change a call. It was odd that Utley didn't touch the bag even after the out call, but obviously Tejada couldn't due to injury. It's almost as if the tie went to the runner.

He easily could have tagged him, Utleys leg was right next to the ball. I think they should have just left it as called. I agree 100% with the "just in case", it was exactly what Granderson did earlier in the game when he was called out but obviously safe. He went and stood on the bag.

None of this matters if you just call that willful interference, award the double play, and move on.
