I didn't really interpret it that way. From her quote, she was just saying that the 90's wasn't as "me me me" or "selfie". To me, the present, with pop music and tight jeans, is like the 80's part 2. The 90's, especially the mid 90's, seemed like things shifted big time. "Me" was out. High fashion glamor was out. A different, more earthy vibe was in. And cargo pants, cargo pants were definitely in. I'm not saying one was better than the other, but it was definitely different.
Let's not delude ourselves into believing the '90s weren't narcissistic as all hell. Being unglamorous sad-sacks doesn't mean it's any less self-centered.
Oh, it's there with every generation. I mean, it's pretty much what teens and twenty somethings do, no matter what era they came up. I guess the perception seemed to be "less me", but in reality, it most likely wasn't. It wasn't cool to appear that you cared about you. It was cool to appear that you were the outkast, loner, non sport playing, sensitive person who knew how to make angry and self reflective music. The Smashing Pumpkins were really good at this.

So you never got any enjoyment out of looking at album art in a cd case, or reading lyrics while checking out cool photos, etc? Just saying, there is something to getting the new album and checking out details about it while listening to it for the first time. If not, I feel bad for you son.

Kinda. The art and packaging can be cool. I never really did the lyric-reading thing. In the end, it never has amounted to more than a minor diversion for me. The music itself is what I really care about. Not to mention I haven't seen a worthwhile set of liner notes in years.

I wish albums were released with liner notes only and no music

I never really got much out of that. CD album art always seemed small and marginalized to me, and quite frankly a ton of the music I like predates the era of "serious" album art anyway. Every Sam Cooke record is pretty much "here's a picture of Sam Cooke." At the end of the day it's just packaging, and is a definitively different artistic effort which often casts pre-assumptions about the music into the minds of listeners. Besides that, I think the era of the album is ending anyway, so who the fuck cares?

I agree with the concern that it is becoming harder, and will become nearly impossible, to differentiate versions of many works. But this sources as much back to the mindless cycle of remixes, remasters, and rereleases as anything. This same forces will ultimately devalue those efforts, and hopefully put a stop to them. Records may be imperfect or technology may improve, but I'd be perfectly happy if everybody just followed those whispered words of wisdom, and let it be (not naked).
