Come on?! Risky Business, Born on the 4th of July, and Rain Man were all great performances. I would also add A Few Good Men, though that one doesn't strike me as a stretch for him.
Tom Cruise is the definition of vanilla. He's fine. But his only "great" performances happen between Interview and Vanilla Sky.

For a dollar? Absolutely.
it's actually 2.00 on the weekend and 1.50 on weekdays...i still refer to it as the dollar theater though
