Can't go wrong with Bloom, though I prefer Teen Dream.

I've only heard the newest album and didn't venture any further.

Give me one song to convert me.
I think their best song is "New Year."

They were not a "loved them from first listen" band for me -- I thought "Myth" was hypnotic and pretty and thought a couple of the other songs on "Bloom" had some good parts, but getting past that took a few listens. The problem with their genre of music is how overwhelmingly the wash of sound consumes the compositions -- at first, everything sounds like the same indistinct mess of reverb-drenched vocals, watery guitar arpeggios, dreamy keyboard effects, and shitty Casio beats. But beyond that outer layer, there are a lot of beautifully-written songs, smartly arranged in their own limited way, which for me only emerged once processing the massive wall of sound became second nature. Once I picked up on what I thought the songs were doing on a compositional level, it became easier for me to listen from the ground up, so to speak, and then go back and make some sense of how those songs were supported by their presentation. This took maybe 3-4 full, dedicated listens, but the payoff was significant -- they're definitely one of my favorite bands working today.

I do think "Depression Cherry" was a step back -- less compelling songwriting, and no big shakes musically -- though I still find it highly enjoyable. I haven't heard the new one yet.

I can highly recommend listening to it as soon as possible. I was expecting this to be a nice enough record of leftovers but its really an album of its own. It sounds quite a bit different than DC even though it's from the same sessions. It's a looser and grittier album with a bit more energy that I thought DC was lacking. (Energy for Beach House standards) There's some darkness here that's kind of new for Beach House. (Especially in 'Elegy To The Void', that song is something else).
'Somewhere Tonight' ends this album with an absolutely gorgeous performance by Victoria. The desperate quality in her voice on that song slays me. It's great.
Definitely it's own album and no throwaway companion piece to DC. I might end up liking this one more.

And Use Your Illusion II isn't much better. Such a bloated mess. I don't think there's a complete song that I enjoyed listening to. There are some great parts but the whole is a mess.

I miss Incubus. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. > Make Yourself > Morning View > A Crow Left of the Murder was a killer run of records.

My friend is asking me for a good list of country/blues type singer/songwriters and I can't think of one blessed fucking artist to recommend that he hasn't already heard.
