If the election was being held in 3 months instead of 13, I think Clinton would win (narrowly against some candidates, by a wide margin over another). A lot can happen in a year, and since no Republican candidate has risen from the crop yet, it's sort've hard to speculate.

My feeling is that if Bush or Rubio doesn't gain some real traction by the end of the year, the GOP "establishment" will push for one of them to drop out. And as of right now, that looks like Bush. I know it's crazy to think because of his warchest and endorsements, but he's run a pitiful campaign so far. At some point, the GOP will have to revise their strategy of just waiting for Trump and Carson to implode.

I still think Trump and Carson have little to no chance. Carson says things just as crazy as Trump, he just does so in a softer voice. That can work in September and October, but not in February and March in my opinion. These guys are just this cycle's Bachmann, Caine, or Rudy. That said, if they're still here in January I could see something like what you're describing. I think it's more likely we'd see a full court press against the "outsiders" from FOX News in an effort to marginalize them.

For those of you who want Bernie to be more specific, what exactly would you like him to say?

Trump's sustained run at the top has surprised me. We were all just hoping he would at least make it to the first debate . I don't think he'll be the nominee but not as certain of that as I was few months ago. I expect Carson slipping before him. But I still don't know which of the grown up Republicans are going to top him.

That's the thing. I would normally agree with the likes of Nate Silver and say Trump has no chance, but what's the alternative? Bush was the obvious choice, but he's been such a lackluster candidate that sometimes I wonder if he's just "putting in the hours" to appease the Bush "legacy" donors. The other thing some of the pundits are missing is that the number of younger conservatives has spiked in the last few years. And "change" candidates appeal to them.

Also, speaking of Nate Silver. Weren't Walker and Bush his "picks" for the GOP nomination early on? Walker's out of the race and Bush is currently polling 5th.

For those of you who want Bernie to be more specific, what exactly would you like him to say?

He needs to talk more (and in greater detail) about how his brand of socialism is different from what the conventional view has been, or else he's doomed when it comes to baby boomer democrats, which will out-vote his younger base. I also think he needs to address those who call him a radical leftist. Even if that's true in relation to politics in America, he's not a radical leftist. He should be reminding people that his views are still based on markets and private business. In the debate, Hillary said "sometimes we need to save capitalism from itself" and "we need a new New Deal." That's basically Bernie's vision in a nutshell, and the reason for opposition to Hillary (from the left), and yet, she's articulating that view better than he is.

And if in the end she's really fighting for the same thing, it doesn't really matter. But these are two people who have been around a long time, and I don't think Bernie exists as a candidate if people thought Hillary was genuine.

I think that bodes better for Rubio than for anyone else.

I'm mostly curious about what Trump's impact will be on whoever DOES get the nomination. His status as media focal point has really done a lot to minimize the infighting, negative profiling, and dirt digging with the other candidates. Those repubs could come out of this with some of the shiniest public images of any candidates to ever survive a primary.

I hope this means that they'll let Lessig onto the stage at the next debate. Having only three candidates won't look very good this early in the process, and it's pretty clear that that is all the Party is interested in right now: how Hillary looks. I'm not too big on Lessig's one-track, gimmicky idea, but he deserves to be on the stage, at least.
