With some of these attempts to pass off rumored plots as original thought in this thread, I think I may just have to attempt to "go dark" for the first time ever on a movie.

As weird as it sounds, Chewie might be the hardest death I could imagine in this film. If anyone's going to die... please don't let it be Chewie...

I guess I fall into a camp that isn't well represented here, which is: I'm excited for this movie, but really worried that behind the visuals and characters with new names, it's going to be sort of hollow in the center if it plays with the same "epic" tropes that we've seen in dozens of other forms of media (Lord of the Rings, ASOIF/Game of Thrones, Lost, etc.). I don't so much care if the rumors are true and I'm not interested in who dies/who's related to whom/etc. as much as I'd like a complex story, told well, with stakes that matter, that asks interesting questions. I was hoping the anthology films could offer something like this, too, but when I heard that the second one is going to be about Han Solo, my eyes rolled out of my head faster than when Rory thought Dean would leave Lindsay for her.

Honestly, the OT is pretty hollow at the center and full to bursting with "epic" tropes.

At times, sure: Star Wars was a basic hero's journey, and ROTJ tried to be everything without being anything specific, so it felt very disjointed. But, not to beat a dead horse, Empire Strikes Back is basically fucking flawless. Yes, our characters are still technically involved in a struggle for the galaxy, but the narrative feels much smaller because--with the exception of Hoth--it's only our protagonists who are in danger, and they make much more personal decisions that ripples outwards and affect others. What I think is lost a lot is that considering how everything works out, Luke took an unnecessary step in leaving Dagobah--he didn't know it at the time, but if he hadn't left, Leia/Chewie/Lando still would've gotten away, and he still would've been whole and gotten a lot of extra training and guidance from Yoda. He makes a stubborn, immature decision because he loves his friends, and it makes no difference--it actually almost gets him killed. It's way more interesting dramatically, of course, but I think it's a stretch to say a situation like that is "pretty hollow."

I'm sure I'll be excited about it but not to the level of this one. Yes, I am emotionally invested in han, luke, chewie and leigh. Thats okay though.

You can trust me, friend. I can't speak for others, but I know nothing about this movie other than the one thing I spoilered and what we've seen in the trailers. I have no knowledge of rumored plots and have not been trying to mask anything as original. It's all just what I'm thinking based on this new trailer.

Im not sure these movies are going to be focusing on those characters though. It seems like they are there to bridge the gap. The story is about Finn and Rey. Sure, the old guys are there but Im not getting the sense that its about them.

I dont know. Im fine with them being the launching pad for new stories.

I completely agree with you. Empire is amazing. Easily the best of the series and the one thing that has kept me a fan (and the only thing that makes me more than just a casual fan anymore).

Empire had little Lucas overlording. So will this. I think it could be a really special movie. But we'll see.

McP's absolutely right that JJ's strengths are well used in trailers. He's great at them. Doesn't mean his weaknesses won't overcome the best parts of the movie itself.
