I saw it a while back and was underwhelmed despite loving its visuals. But I had the urge to revisit it, so I tried the theatrical cut this time (I had watched the director's cut originally), and it was like night and day. The color timing was all fucked up in the DC and made everything way too dark and manipulated, the editing is much better in the theatrical version (the DC is draggy and messy), and the film loses a lot of its power when Tangerine Dream's droning, unusual soundscapes are replaced by Jerry Goldsmith's unremarkable orchestral score. I love it now.
well great, now i hate it.

"Goodnight Mommy" was very good. Loved the cinematography. The building tension was insane. Reminded me of Polanski. Unfortunately, the theater we saw it in was filled with bluehairs who needed their significant others to read them the subtitles and that really destroyed my enjoyment of the movie.

Local cinema is having a Cans fest, so for a donated can of food to go to a food bank - you can go and see an old(ish) release.
Off to see Ant Man tonight.

Watched the new Paranormal Activity earlier today - wouldn't recommend it. Pisses me off with the latest batch of found footage stuff the despite how bad the situation around people - they just keep filming, even when their lives are in danger. Plus the ending of this one didn't make a while lot of sense as far as 'found footage' goes

Haha, I was thinking how similar they were as well. I find theaters/backstage to be innately fascinating and I loved all the actors, so I really dug it. But it's definitely a movie that a lot of people will not enjoy. Not surprised to find out it's totally bombing at the box office.

I liked the cast too, and the backstage aesthetic was fine, but where Birdman knew what it was exploring and did so cohesively and intelligently (and poetically), Steve Jobs never seems to find a central theme, idea, or insight. The focus on the daughter felt very trite and, frankly, wrong-headed to me. A very lazy way to characterize Jobs as a flawed, human figure. Birdman tackled artistic obsession/narcissism/egomania and how it interacts with familial obligation and personal relationships much more insightfully, truthfully, and ecstatically. It walks while Jobs talks.

Nah, he's made some good movies. Though I haven't liked anything he's made lately, and it's been a long time since I've seen the ones I did like.

i haven't seen a lot of his stuff...i thought slumdog was overrated, and sunshine was 3/4th's of a good movie

Never bothered with Slumdog, but I hated Sunshine. The last movie of his I liked was Millions.
