but wouldn't it be more like a mutation super power? Just because they have it doesn't mean they know how to get a hold on it and use it. They could just be walking around their whole life with a shit ton of midi chlorians and be all "whatever".

What's the point then, really? "Oh turns out you have superpowers to do whatever the plot requires, have fun"

It works better as an alternative to a world of gadgets and technology, not as a really dumb add-on to an already science heavy world.

Thing is, you can ignore most of the other terrible shit in the prequels. You can pretend Jar Jar doesn't exist, ignore whiny Darth Vader, all the trade federation bullshit... but midichlorians stick. Even if they are barely mentioned them from then on, its part of the overarching theme. Now every Jedi just has a particularly beneficial bacterial infection. Its mega fucking lame.
