I watched Empire last night with the commentary on. The things that come out of George Lucas mouth go from completely embarrassing to super thoughtful. Apparently he thought it would be a hilarious joke when the millenium falcon flew out of the asteroid snakes mouth. He was hoping the audience would get a big chuckle out of that. What? Kershner was great and I love how he placed so much emphasis on character development rather than slapstick humor. Apparently george lucas wanted to keep it funny "Saturday matinee".

Also, Carrie Fisher never has anything interesting to say.

Sounds like you just bypassed ROTS and ANH? I thought you were working your way through in order.

Empire is clearly my favourite but for some reason I'm looking forward to re-watching Jedi the most. It's been a few years.

I actually watcehd Revenge of the Sith first. I wasn't planning on watching all of them. It just kind of happened. So I watched Sith, Phantom, Clones, a new hope, and now Empire

I watched Empire last night with the commentary on. The things that come out of George Lucas mouth go from completely embarrassing to super thoughtful. Was reading earlier that people were hired to train the staff working on the films on how not to annoy George and say no to him without him losing his mind. He had a fierce temper making the films apparently and would take even slight suggestions as criticism. Apparently Empire was the one he had least control over..little wonder it's everyone's favourite.

There are plenty of ways midi-chlorians could've been introduced in the prequels to make them more interesting. Maybe half of the Jedi council believes that that's where Force-attunement comes from, and the other thinks it's just a coincidence/over-thinking? (I'm basically stealing this idea from a book called The Intuitionist, which is about elevator repair.) That'd build some tension between some really flat characters (Qui-gon and Yoda, really) and help bring that idea of doubt back. But that'd take some really sharp, interesting writing, and I don't think Lucas was up for it.

Oh man, I disagree. I think there are plenty of bad ideas, here a few...

* I think Qi-Gon was a bad ideal. This should have just been Obi-Wan.

* Excluding more development on the Sith, especially with Maul's and Palpatine's relationship was a bad idea because it didn't happen at all.

* I think the idea that "stopping people from dying" was a bad idea to turn Anakin. I think original notes / drafts focus more on his lust for power. That is a better idea.

* Not including more about the Clone Wars was a bad idea.

* Making Owen Lars Anakin's step-brother with no real connection was a bad idea. Why didn't EP1 show Anakin follow Obi-Won on some damn fool idealistic crusade?

* Not showing more connection, genuine friendship between Anakin and Obi-Wan was a bad idea.

* Not showing Obi-Wan go by "Ben" at some point in EP3 was a bad idea.

* Not showing Obi-Won serve under Bail Organa was a bad idea.

* Not showing Alderan and building a connection with the planet was a bad idea.

* Having all the Jedi look like they come from Tatooine was a bad idea. Ben is supposed to be in hiding. Why is he dressed in standard Jedi attire?

* Jedi's not being able to love and do it with other people was a bad idea.

* Having Anakin portrayed by two different actors was a bad idea. Should have just started with Hayden (or maybe someone else, point is, one actor for Anakin), and make him more like Luke's age in EP4.

* The whole Clones = 1st Generation Storm Troopers, and the Sifo Dyus (sp?) / Count Dooku / Darth TRex thing was a bad idea. WTF?

* Jar Jar was a bad idea.

I could go on, but I think I'll stop there.
