That helicopter sequence was absolutely stunning in the worst possible way. Utterly, magnificently stupid. It was a master class in total nonsense.

Not only did they shoot the cartoon helicopter with a grenade/rocket launcher thingy, not only did it detonate in the center of the helicopter, and NOT ONLY did the helicopter keep flying with no real damage, but the heroes ACTUALLY PLANNED for that beforehand, discussed it in their own helicopter, and simply used the explosive direct hit on the goddamned helicopter as a DIVERSION for the real attack, which was flying on top of the helicopter and dropping a robot man on it.
Spoiler: show
Image

Bravo. Just Bra...vo...
And then what happened? The bad guy beats them to the bad guy base anyway (I guess he can swim fast?). He doesn't kill Arnie. He doesn't stop the heroes (who shoot it a bunch because... um... it makes them feel better?). He kills the security guy because he suddenly cares about witnesses?

Has anyone who made this movie ever seen a real life helicopter before? Do they know they aren't X-Wings? Do they know anything about anything?

Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

The conversation in the good guy chopper should have went:

"Hey can you shoot that helicopter down with that explosive? Yeah? great. Problem solved. Oh wait doesn't matter, he will still be waiting for us at the bad guy base so we'll just walk right in a shoot him a bunch of times. Why is he trying to stop us again? Why are we trying to stop him? Fuck it I'm flying this thing into the bridge."

Good thing they brought infinite bullets to shoot the harmless but rude hologram boy. You can't let that sort of light taunting slide.

I have the day off tomorrow (for Election Day). I'm thinking about going down to the city to see a "new 4K Restoration" of Pather Panchali. I'd be traveling for about five hours round-trip. And I have to be back to work Wednesday morning, so it's not like I can stretch it into a two-day thing. Not sure if I'm going to actually do it. The alternative is to stick around here, get a haircut, and maybe take a test drive on a car.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Billy Two Hats. Worth a watch if you are a Gregory Peck (he does a fun Scottish accent) or an obscure western fan.
