While I was not a part of that letter, and would never be, I would certainly argue there's a difference between "We are collectively together because of Pearl Jam, we have become a community, now we have lost one of our own....as our bond was (and to some degree still is) based on the emotional pull of this band, etc etc" and "I suffered a loss recently please play..."
One is a communal release of sorrow through the very thing that brought us together to begin with. The other is...I mean, probably heartfelt, but a little weird and a bizarrely disconnected way to deal with your grief no matter how you slice it.

Maybe Pearl Jam should just fill all their setlists with requests from fans who've ever had someone they love die.

I don't recall ever hearing that. I'm not saying you are wrong, but this is news to me.cutuphalfdead wrote:And from what I remember the people who were closest to Frank were put off by the whole thing.Birds in Hell wrote:That's a very different scenario.stip wrote:We wrote up a letter as a message board after Dirty Frank died requesting that they play Long Road at Camden, after all.
Ohh, you mean people on the board? Maybe. But quite a few people who were very close to him were quite supportive of it.

Re: General Pearl Jam Bitching
I think the weirdest thing about it is I didn't once question if it was real. it sounds exactly like something someone on that board would do.
Seems like instead of saying "I hope your song gets played", someone should say "dude, maybe you need some help?"

Guys, did they actually play it? I think I remember Ed mentioning him maybe? Or did they just ignore it?

Yeah I meant on the board. I obviously didn't poll everyone, but I know a few people who were very close to Frank were kind of put off by the whole letter writing thing.stip wrote:I don't recall ever hearing that. Guys, this person is probably not making decisions with the same kind of crystal clarity that we, as people who haven't (to my knowledge) just last week endured the devastating deaths of our young spouses, are able to enforce upon his behavior from afar. There's a chance he may look back on this in a number of years and realize how it must have looked to other people, but people become irrational, emotionally supercharged beings in the face of far lesser tragedies than this. Cut this person some slack. I can't imagine being in his shoes at this point in my life.

You're gonna have egg on your face when that guy's arrested for murder, with "song request" listed as the motive.

Re: General Pearl Jam Bitching
its not so much the guy asking for a song. obviously, the guy is in no position to think clearly. The creepy ass "community" acting like its perfectly normal and trying to petition PJ to play it, with the implication that they would be assholes if they ignored it, is what bugs me. What the fuck is playing Come Back going to accomplish, exactly?
I swear if there is ever a John Lennon type shooting with this band, its gonna come from one of the regulars there. In the best of times they don't seem to have a solid grasp of reality.
