I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Wow, why is that? I'd say they are my favorite directors, and A Serious Man is easily my least favorite of their films. My assumption is that a lot of Jewish humor is going right over my head. What is it that you like so much about this movie?
i'm sure some of the jewish humor went over my head too, but it did not permeate the whole film and wasn't a distraction at all

i guess i just really enjoy their approach as to how we try to understand why things happen to us and how we respond to them - albeit in their own bleak, almost sarcastic way

they've had a lot of great performances, and stuhlbarg's is right up there with the best

The performances are definitely great. I just felt like there were whole swaths of dialogue that were boring, which isn't something I can say about any other Coen Bros. film; and I think that boredom is more a reflection on my own background, rather than the story they were telling.
have you just seen it once? i liked it on first viewing, but the second is when i really appreciated it

also, rank the coens' filmz

Yeah, I didn't get it on the first viewing either. Seems to happen to me a lot with Coen movies.

Heh looking at that list, they were in a real slump there for awhile (imo). I didn't like that Lady Killers phase at all.

Oh man, Tom Cruise and JK Simmons are both so excellent in that movie. Hanks in particular turns in one of the most criminally underappreciated performances I can think of.
It's all ruined by that Wayans brother shitting on everything.
