Im amazed on how big PJ has become after avocado here.
I remember in 2000 with Binaural, it was very hard to meet PJ fans who knew about their craft. And right now, not only they play for huge crowds but they know about their music.

I was teaching in a very low income, very diverse area, too. So it wasn't exactly a hub for music that's really aimed at middle class white kids.

It's amazing what happens when bands actually come through your town on occasion.VinylGuy wrote:Im amazed on how big PJ has become after avocado here.

And I teach in one of the whitest places in the world, which makes all the difference.McParadigm wrote:I was teaching in a very low income, very diverse area, too. So it wasn't exactly a hub for music that's really aimed at middle class white kids.
Though I've had lots of black and Hispanic students tell me how much they loved Nirvana too.

I still live in the midwest, unlike Matt. There is only one band with T-shirts stocked next to Marley, Hendrix, Lennon, and all the other icons of the past and that is Kurt/Nirvana. They're the only ones I see 13 year olds wearing too...only time I see a Pearl Jam shirt is at a Pearl Jam concert (though I haven't even been to one of those since 2013). No one else from the '90's rock scene rates at all.McParadigm wrote:I spent ten years teaching teenagers (ending in 2012), and I never heard a blip about Nirvana. A few times Pearl Jam was mentioned, a few times Alice, but I cant remember a single Nirvana/Pumpkins/Soundgarden reference. They'd request ACDC at a dance (sigh), but look bored and wander off to buy stuff from the student store if Teen Spirit came on.
I even had two different students who liked Bad Religion, but no one claiming Nirvana. And not much rock in general to be honest. It's a relic.
Alice In Chains was reaaaaaaly popular when the soundalike bands started cropping up in the late '90's to mid '00's but now it's only the 30 - 40 year old dudes that were into them way back when, kinda like w/Soundgarden as Matt mentions. I think it's because everybody loves a band that's perpetually 27, only people who knew them when they were 27 want to see them when they're 50.

After teaching diverse blocks of college kids for 15 years my take away is that they don't seem to care much about either - Kurt cobain has a hot topic Bob Marley t shirt sort of relevance but that's the biggest difference. I hear about pj a little bit more, but that's more due to the occasional high profile gig. They know Eddie vender as some kind of rock and roll statesman, but theres not a huge cultural relevancy exchange rate for that currency.

Slightly off topic, but I think the most RM ever surprised me was how off I seemed to be with my speculation that bleach was a fairly enjoyable but disposable record blown out of proportion due to the need for people to find more nirvana material to care about.
Also, very ape came on my shuffle yesterday, and it was awesome
