Why is There No Helmet Thread?

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Why is There No Helmet Thread?

Post by LoathedVermin72 »

What kind of a '90s rock board is this?! Let's talk about Helmet because they kick ass.

Been rocking the shit out of Size Matters lately. Very different from their early stuff, of course, but still killer.

Always figured this band was an agenda-pusher created by the national cycling safety council, trying to make helmets sound cool to kids

Helmet are exactly the sound I think of when I think "rock music" (and I mean that in the best possible way): hard-driving, angry, aggressive, mean, snarling, noisy, energetic, relentless, with hooky songwriting and a deep low-end thump. Not a ballad in sight. No one else sounds like these guys, though they have influenced countless bands.

But enough talk - let's rock the fuck out:

They always sounded like Tool covering early Nine Inch Nails demos to me. Which is to say, snore.

Even before I was aware of those other two bands, Helmet had a feeling to me of being deeply tapped into what I found to be an unremarkable space. I suppose if you inhabit that space, it's gripping stuff, but...no

Definitely happy Battles went instrumental, but I haven't really gotten into the new album. I've given it a few listens, but I always seem to tune out here and there, which never really happened with Gloss Drop except for during the little interlude bits.

Losing the vocalist was not good for Battles. I'm pretty sure the band feels the same way.

I haven't listened to much Battles, but I'm sure it's better than Helmet.
