Force awakens has officially been rated PG13 in the US

The prequels managed to highlight the things that were bad about the OT. Things people were willing to let go or overlook or maybe didn't even notice in the way the movies were plotted and written became ugly and obvious. People began to rewatch the OT through the lens of the PT. Those movies were so bad, they made the flaws in other movies obvious to those how had never seen or cared about them before.

pretty much. The power of those movies is really in what they awakened in people (no pun intended), as much if not more than their value as films. Though they're still on point in that regard, their legacy and impact transcends the filmmaking. And the prequels damaged the idea of star wars by showing that they are just movies, and could be bad movies, and made me reevaluate the OT as movies in a way I would not have done before.

We really could not be more diametrically opposed in the way we approach seemingly everything, stip.

We've touched on it earlier in this thread, but this whole notion of SW "transcending" being "just films" I find to be total nonsense. I hate that kind of thinking. It's the same kind of thought process that places classic films above any kind of reproach in the minds of many. SW, and all other films, are just that, and should be viewed, criticized, and discussed as just that. Everything else is distraction. Saying that the prequels being made you suddenly engage with the OT in a critical way only says something about you and nothing about the films themselves.

I hope this doesn't sound harsh or insulting, because I don't mean it to. Just being honest. As someone who values film and art culture, I think this kind of stuff is important.

No, it doesn't. And Joey kind of got to this (other than Jedi our opinions seem to be pretty interchangeable in this thread) but I respectfully disagree. Yes the Star Wars movies are ultimately a little under six and a half hours of movies. But those six and a half movies were transformative for both film and audience in a way that hardly any other film has ever been. And so it becomes very difficult to simply appreciate them as films without incorporating that external baggage. Star Wars becomes sacred in a way most art never does. Maybe not for everyone, but for many millions of people, and surely you can understand that anthropologically even if you haven't personally experienced it.

That's why the prequels were so devastating and engender a hatred that something like the Hobbit movies do not (though those films are better than the prequels by quite a bit). Both are unworthy prequels to vastly superior original trilogies, but the Hobbit is simply a series of movies that didn't live up to expectations. For many people the prequels were a violation, precisely because they exposed the lie of the religion of star wars--that these ARE just movies.

The appeal of Force Awakens is at least in part the chance to believe again. It's a restoration as much as it is a film experience.
