My orthodontist as a kid exclusively played just Rod Stewart every single day. Every time I went in there.... Rod Stewart.

He also only employed large breasted women who work really low cut nurse shirts, and sometimes your head would touch them. So I gave the Rod Stewart thing a pass.

I prefer the other four versions of the theme song of The Wire to the Tom Waits version. I couldn't take the Tom Waits version after about the first two episodes of whatever season it's in (2?).

Ok guys, here's what I have to say on the matter:

Rod Stewart's version is friendlier and easier to listen to, but cheesy. It's the perfect song to listen to while you're shopping for some new stemware at JCPenney.

The Tom Waits version sounds he channeled an 88-year-old Bruce Springsteen.

Ultimately, the points go to Waits for writing the song. But it feels like the song was written for Rod Stewart to sing. Neither are ones that I would want to listen to.

The best thing about Stewart's cover I ever read was that the only connection he seemed to have with the downtown train girls is that they use the same hair care products. His version is pretty music, but is also a powerful song stripped of all its heart and soul.
