so its just a really shitty lamp?
It doesn't even make sense. Is it controlling an overhead lamp too? When it is "off" a little lamp is still on. When the little lamp goes off, it gets bright in the room. It's pissing me off, actually.
It's a night light. The first part of the gif is what it looks like turned off with the room lights on. The second part of the gif is what it looks like turned on with the room lights off.

It seemed pretty obvious to me as well.

They are making it look like the room lights are being turned off and on by touching the lamp. You can't deny that

I'm pretty sure the marketing department are the ones who came up with "we will have an R2-D2 like robot but not R2-D2, so we can sell new things," anyway.

Yes, but the important thing is that it looks awesome and adorable and is worth buying if you never really wanted a jar jar binks touch lamp.

Did you know the "Kessel Run - 12 parsecs" line is accurate? The MF's Nav computer is able to plot better routes than most nav computers. Meaning it can navigate closer to stars, planets and other gravity obstacles.

That's an EU thing, though--in the books, the "Kessel Run" was a smuggler's route between a group of black holes, so the goal was to make the shortest run. That's no longer canon, but "Sheev" is.
