Post by stip »

What are some good movie news/analysis sites in the vein of screen rant and collider, I'm not looking for podcast sites

LV will disagree but I like Drew McWeeny on Hitfix. It's not just reviews though he does new bits too.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. All I read is Armond White (National Review and Out) and filmcolossus.com.

Film colossus is an interesting site. What draws you to it?

Well, I'm friends with the guys who run it, and they approach film in the way I think it should be approached. They are free of a lot of the annoying, prejudiced baggage a lot of other critics bring to their criticism. They try to edify instead of harangue.

I visit Dark Horizons daily. It replaced Ain't It Cool for me several years back.

Stip, given your penchant for textual analysis I'm actually certain you'd love a site called Birth. Movies. Death. Good mix of modern pop and geek culture movies whilst also covering a lot of niche, genre and "high brow" films.

If you can push through the barrier of reading film crit hulks all CAPS essays (and you really will need to push through 2 or 3 of his articles before your eyes stop bleeding at the style and you no longer notice it) he has written some truly great essays on cinema.

The birthmoviesdeath review of Jessica Jones was exceptional. It's made me want to sit down and start the series again.

Glad you're enjoying it. :D

Personal mileage may vary but I find Devin Faraci is a consistently great movie writer (strong analysis and pretty entertaining prose), although he comes across as a bit of a turd sometimes in comments and when he gets his back up.

Evan Satthoff is just really entertaining. Has a fantastic turn of phrase and a dry wit.

He doesn't write as much for them anymore but I'll reiterate that you should go through FILMCRITHULK's archive. He seriously knows his shit and provides great insight on why things do or don't work in a movie. Even when you disagree with him, he gives you a ton to chew over. The other writers all have their niche and can be quite entertaining.
