Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Watched The Wolfpack documentary last night. It was good, not great. When their story broke, I was fascinated. But the doc plays more like a character study than anything else. There are a number of valid questions that could have been explored:

Are the mother and father mentally ill?
Is there something wrong with the daughter? If not, why is she hardly seen?
What about life outside the apartment is really striking for the sons when they finally venture out?
Are there any sort of socialization strengths/weaknesses the kids might have, given their years pent up indoors?

Instead, you're basically watching these six sons begin to venture outside for the first time in their lives, and/or spend most of their time re-enacting scenes from their favorite movies. The eldest son has a knack for cinema -- he's making costumes all the time, and writes and shoots his first short film towards the end of the doc.

Interesting flick, with some really nice, warm cinematography. But I think it would have benefitted from some deeper exploration of any number of the themes that presented themselves.

Yeah, I had a lot of problems with that movie, too. It accepts the family's twisted worldview too much for me to be comfortable with it. The movie's treatment of the daughter is especially troubling, I'd agree. And even the acceptance of these brothers, who are really unkind people (even if there are reasons for that) was problematic for me. It's one thing to look at them, but they were sort of held up as heroes in a lot of ways.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains was one of the most perfect, incredible movies I've ever seen. It's bewildering and depressing that no one ever seems to talk about it.

Room was really lovely, too. Some odd choices and some interesting deviations from the book, but I really enjoyed it overall.

Lego Movie was very fun and funny, but it gave me a headache. I'm just not cut out for Scott Pilgrim, Baz Luhrman, etc...

Really looking forward to seeing Room, will probably have to wait for streaming.

Similar experience for me with Lego Movie. I didn't get a headache but it felt very spastic and "modern" like all those cartoons that I can't stand because they're so busy and all over the place.

But it's super clever and I laughed a lot.

Howard is certainly capable of making interesting movies. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong. I hope you really dig it.
