Price vs. the Jays lineup is going to be amazing to watch.

but then you realized that it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to (a) recognize that the red sox needed an ace, and (b) sign the best-available starting pitcher on the market?cutuphalfdead wrote:I almost posted "Dombrowski is a genius" today.numbers wrote:That's a dangerous game to start playing.cutuphalfdead wrote:bumpcutuphalfdead wrote:I'm OK with them not flipping for Hamels now if it means they sign Zimmermann or Price next off season.

They had the same situation last year and failed to have enough smarts.Chris_H_2 wrote:but then you realized that it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to (a) recognize that the red sox needed an ace, and (b) sign the best-available starting pitcher on the market?cutuphalfdead wrote:I almost posted "Dombrowski is a genius" today.numbers wrote:That's a dangerous game to start playing.cutuphalfdead wrote:bumpcutuphalfdead wrote:I'm OK with them not flipping for Hamels now if it means they sign Zimmermann or Price next off season.

but they tried signing jon lester; he just signed elsewhere. and i think they were smart not to sign james shields or throw a 7th year at scherzer. their stupidity was low balling lester before having to deal him to the a's.numbers wrote:They had the same situation last year and failed to have enough smarts.Chris_H_2 wrote:but then you realized that it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to (a) recognize that the red sox needed an ace, and (b) sign the best-available starting pitcher on the market?cutuphalfdead wrote:I almost posted "Dombrowski is a genius" today.numbers wrote:That's a dangerous game to start playing.cutuphalfdead wrote:bumpcutuphalfdead wrote:I'm OK with them not flipping for Hamels now if it means they sign Zimmermann or Price next off season.

That's what happens when Larry Lucchino is making your baseball decisions.numbers wrote:They had the same situation last year and failed to have enough smarts.Chris_H_2 wrote:but then you realized that it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to (a) recognize that the red sox needed an ace, and (b) sign the best-available starting pitcher on the market?cutuphalfdead wrote:I almost posted "Dombrowski is a genius" today.numbers wrote:That's a dangerous game to start playing.cutuphalfdead wrote:bumpcutuphalfdead wrote:I'm OK with them not flipping for Hamels now if it means they sign Zimmermann or Price next off season.
It's hard to criticize the signing...Price was the best available pitcher, he has plenty of AL East experience, the team isn't exactly short on money, and money is all it cost you since the draft pick compensation became negated with the Toronto trade. And as long as he pitches well, he's most likely opting out in 3 years, so the length and total dollar amount may be negligible points. You can criticize them for being in the position of having to do this, but it's hard to criticize them for doing it to rectify past mistakes.

Re: MLB
They didn't really actually try to sign Lester, they just tried to make it look like they were to save face. I'm happy with the end result because I'd rather have Price than Lester, but the clusterfucky way they got here was a joke.Chris_H_2 wrote:but they tried signing jon lester; he just signed elsewhere. and i think they were smart not to sign james shields or throw a 7th year at scherzer. their stupidity was low balling lester before having to deal him to the a's.numbers wrote:They had the same situation last year and failed to have enough smarts.Chris_H_2 wrote:but then you realized that it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to (a) recognize that the red sox needed an ace, and (b) sign the best-available starting pitcher on the market?cutuphalfdead wrote:I almost posted "Dombrowski is a genius" today.numbers wrote:That's a dangerous game to start playing.cutuphalfdead wrote:bumpcutuphalfdead wrote:I'm OK with them not flipping for Hamels now if it means they sign Zimmermann or Price next off season.

Re: MLB
for the record, i have no issues with this price signing at all. i think it's completely reasonable. i would rather have price over grienke (who probably signs with the giants or dodgers).numbers wrote:They didn't really actually try to sign Lester, they just tried to make it look like they were to save face. Agreed. While they nailed down the best starting pitcher and closer, this team is still not a World Series contender. More pitching, please.MattA75 wrote:Why couldn't they have had both?numbers wrote:They didn't really actually try to sign Lester, they just tried to make it look like they were to save face. Re: MLB
I'm ok with the rotation as it stands now...I think Eduardo Rodriguez is only scratching the surface of what he can be, I think Porcello will be a lot better now that the heat won't be nearly as much on him to live up to that contract, and you have enough options to have a respectable 4 and 5 starter (Buchholz (who I'd love to trade), Kelly, Johnson, Owens, Miley). Then see where we are at the trade deadline and go after a pitcher then if we're in contention for the playoffs/division. I would like to see them pick up one more veteran bullpen arm, preferably a good left hander.Coach wrote:Agreed.
