I should throw on that first solo album at some point today. I love that thing and I haven't listened in years.

STP have so many awesome lesser known songs. Some of my favorites are Ride the Cliché, Hello It's Late, Adhesive, Glide, Still Remains, Atlanta, Silvergun Superman, Army Ants, Wonderful, Take a Load Off, Maver. I will always love STP.

True talk, and not trying to take away from people's thoughts today, but: for some reason, I never got into STP. I knew all of their singles that were on the radio, but I never bought an album, couldn't name all of their albums, and can't name a single non-album song. When Velvet Revolver was a thing, I didn't get the hype. It's odd, too, because it seems like a band like STP would have been right in my wheelhouse.

ock star Scott Weiland, best known for fronting the multi-platinum 1990s band Stone Temple Pilots, was found dead just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Bloomington, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

The 48-year-old, scheduled to perform at a club in Rochester on Friday, was found in a recreational motor vehicle outside the Country Inn & Suites at the Mall of America and was already dead when officers arrived, according to Bloomington Police.

The Associated Press is reporting "a small quantity" of cocaine was found during a search of the bus bedroom, according to police.

Investigators say they also found a small amount of cocaine elsewhere in the bus and arrested a California man who was traveling with Weiland. The man hasn't been charged.

No manner of death has been released yet, but both Bloomington Police and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

If all you ever heard was the STP on the radio, then you never really heard STP (and I take nothing away from their hits, a lot of them still sound tremendous to this day)

They were a fantastic fucking band, much like Pearl Jam in that the whole was much greater than the sum of its parts. Creatively, they took a lot of chances after Purple (less so on Tiny Music than on 4 and Shangri La Dee Da), and none of their albums ever sounded the same. Hell, I even enjoyed the fuck out of the reunion album on the whole, even if it was more straight up rock than the records they made before they broke up the first time.

He was a truly great frontman in an era where the idea of the "classic" rock frontman was mocked and scoffed at. Regardless of what you think of Velvet Revolver's musical output (and I'm one of the few who thinks that the second album, on the whole, is better than the first, aside from the two huge hits on Contraband), to stand up on that stage with Slash and Duff and not only NOT be overshadowed, but to grab much of the attention yourself, is remarkable.

It was easy to get disenfranchised with him because he was so talented as a performer and you just wish he'd get his shit together and you wanted to believe that he could and would do it, and he was so great that you'd want to give him chance after chance.

The biggest mystery to me is always this: there has to be a first time you took heroin.

There has to be a first time. At some point you weren't hooked, you had a choice, and you said 'yes.' What the hell?

Honestly, every junkie seems to become rock legend genius the moment they die. I'm all for anybody who wants to stand in front and call bullshit...even I just by saying "guys, band x was pretty unremarkable."

I like their albums, I liked his singing, and they were amazingly consistent considering his drug addictions, probably more than the Big Four turned out to be.

I don't think even the most ardent Weiland fans on here would throw out the genius or tragedy label. Seems to be more 'this band had a bunch of good songs sucks this guy couldn't keep himself together'. I think Tom Waits is boring I'm not gonna throw my jizz around the Tom Waits is Dead Thread when he kicks just to tell it like it is.

I think any time a person dies at a young age, especially when they had some element of control in their death, it's tragic. But, yeah, I hear what you're saying, bada. And no one that I've seen is calling him a genius legendary rock god or whatever.

And it seems to me a person's death is the best time to celebrate the best of that person's life. He was a great performer, a dynamic front man, who had cool voice and recorded a lot of songs that meant a lot to people. There's nothing wrong with remembering the good things.

I preferred STP to all other '90's bands save Nirvana, PJ, and the Pumpkins -- they had a sunny, melodic side to offset their heavy, sludgy side which felt unique among bands that I listened to at the time, and I felt then and still feel now that they could go to places musically -- theorywise -- that were beyond most of their peers' abilities. I had and still have a deep connection with their music, and thought Scott was at best a tremendously passionate and versatile singer. Lotta sad feelings today.

Damn it this makes me sad. When I heard the news on the radio this morning I had to hold back a tear. It feels like a small part of my youth dies with Scott Weiland. STP was just one of those "right bands at the right time" when I was 15 years old and Core was released.
