There's no low end, which STP have always thrived on. It sounds thin and overly crisp (not in a good way). Anemic. Distant. Detached.

It's almost shocking when listening to everything yesterday. That album has so much depth and breadth. It's round and deep and full. Their first album actually has a lot more of that than I remember, too.

I don't have any issues with the production on Shangri-La. The slow jams are were its at on that album and they sound beautiful.

That Howard Stern interview is pretty cool....About the ex letter, it remind me a story a friend of mine told me, she worked in the production team of the first time STP came to Argentina.

The band was ok, very friendly and cool, they traveled and stay together but Weiland was a mess. He was apart from the band, he didnt want to use the production van because " everyone there is a fbi agent" and then went to the stadium alone in a taxi. He came in a little late but everything was fine, and the show was great.
So yeah, the guy was difficult to say at least.

No doubt...But the ex's letter illustrates the way everyone else (herself included) was an enabler. They all had enough money that they didn't NEED to keep touring, but they kept rolling him out and propping him up despite his demons. Makes me hate the whole lot of them, despite loving the first few records.

The band? i think those guys did what they could. And they loved playing live.

Yes, the band. And I disagree that they did what they could. What they COULD have done is said, "No more STP until this dude is healthy."

But I have a hard heart when it comes to musicians. I've spent my whole life around them, and I'm convinced that 99% of them are doing it for the ego, with 1% doing it because its their soul's destiny. The Deleo bros. and Kretz strike me as part of the 99%.

What makes you think he'd stop using if he wasn't in the band and not touring? They kicked him out and he still did drugs.

This is nobody's fault but Scott's.

Not sure how much I would say is the band's fault, since they seemed to actually care about him, and they fired him more than once. I do wonder, however, about the dudes in The Wildabouts. Seeing those performance videos where the band just plays while Scott doesn't even know where he is...that doesn't sit well with me.

I'm listening to 12 Bar Blues for the first time right now, and if the first two tracks are any indication, I fucking love it. So weird, experimental, progressive. I've never heard anything quite like it. I think "Barbarella" was one of the best songs I've ever heard - honest, idiosyncratic, beautiful, devastating, strange. Wow.

I saw a Velvet Revolver show in a smaller club way back when and it was great. Thats about the only live Weiland i saw though.

Yes, I'd be hesitant to lay any blame for any of this on the other members of STP too. They're not Scott's counsellors, or necessarily even his close friends. I'm quite sympathetic to the other guys in bands like this (thinking particularly of Alice in Chains whose career was effectively put on hold even earlier) who simply want to play music and capitalise on their success while they can but are prevented from effectively doing so because of another member's serious drug habit. It must be incredibly frustrating.

That aside, I've been listening to STP a bit this week and finding a lot to like. I know I've talked about this before on RM but I have a tendency to have a kneejerk reaction against some things I liked when I was a teenager and I think STP had fallen under that banner for me to an extent. One thing that struck me is the musicianship of the band, Dean DeLeo has some fantastic guitar tones and playing on those records. I haven't heard anything past Tiny Music yet as that's all I had on my hard drive but I'm tempted to go further now.

It can't be shouted loud enough how good a job B'Ob did producing Purple and Tiny Music. The guitar tones and overdubs are great. Credit where credit is truly due.

O'Brien used to make great sounding records.

As with some musicians, I think his tastes and approach have simply changed over the years.
