I'm excited at the prospect, I truly am. As a lifelong Star Wars geek how can I not be? But I still remember the sinking feeling in my gut the day I saw the first prequel. I was so excited for a new Star Wars movie then and the let down was almost unbearable. I just am not making any expectations for myself. If it is great, I'll promptly go home and rub one out. If it isn't, I'll probably still go home and rub one out, but out of shame instead of excitement.Strat wrote:I can't tell if you are excited about Force Awakens or not. True story.E.H. Abrams also commented on the early story process saying,
"We don’t write a treatment but there are countless times we came up with something and said “oh, this would be so great for Episode VIII!” or “Thats what we could get to in IX!” It was just that kind of forward moving story. But we knew this had to neither be a backwards moving nostalgic trip only nor a beginning of a movie without a satisfying conclusion, and that was part of the balancing act — embracing what we have inherited and using that where and whenever possible to tell a story that hasn’t been seen yet. We also knew that certain things were inevitable in our minds but that didn’t mean it would be inevitable for whoever came in next."

I read online that some guy had made anti-cheese edits of the prequels, and I fell asleep during the phantom menace one last night. that movie is so bad.

The classical star wars elements are REALLY broad. Other than the space station/death star stuff the overlaps weren't that egregious. There are going to be lightsaber fights, mentors, space battles, the force, big super weapons. It's the heart of the series, and a pretty standard part of serialized story telling (and this is episode 7).
And, as always, if it's done well who gives a shit. Did anyone roll their eyes at the return of the nazis and sula in Last Crusade?

I am really intrigued by what Rian Johnson will do with this story. He is not an obvious choice for a movie like this.
The jurassic world guy was hugely disappointing. I hope someone gives him a great script.

yeah, the new star trek movie seems like a very expensive tv special....full of one liners, no drama, no story at all. What a shame, the first one was good.

How did Rocky turn out to be the shining example of aging a franchise gracefully?
Also, if Star Wars sucks too, will we finally return to a world where original ideas outnumber sequels?

Well in fairness we have to wait and see on Batman. And I liked the two new star treks, but I hated the old star trek, so I'm not the right kind of judge for that one.McParadigm wrote:Oh man. LotR you're right about.
Jurassic Park and Terminator did have a long string of sub par movies prior to the current ones, though. Can't pin that solely on the new ones.
